We had one installed during our reno since we are on well water. It helps to know the water hardness in order to select the most efficient unit. We decided on a NaCl system after reviewing costs.
If one feels slimey, it can mean that you're using too much salt. You will also need to ensure that your outside hose bibs are fed from the incoming water line and not after the water softener. Guests find that they don't need to use as much shampoo that they used to use.
