Despite the common thought here that Alex Smith held down the team Sunday, Smith's overall production to the team yesterday graded out very positive in 3 rankings:
Smith: QBR 94.1, QB rating 99, PFF 71.9
Winston: QBR 83.6, QB rating 97, PFF 50.7

This is why we should use our brains instead of repeating the garbage fed to us by Mellinger and Teicher. If Smith only had 34 plays yesterday to do something with the ball and earns both a rushing and passing TD, a FG, to 1 INT (first red zone interception since 2013) and completes an outstanding 77% of passes ... we should probably focus on the real problem yesterday: The Defense. Who didn't show up and allowed Winston/Martin to hold the ball for 35 minutes, earn 24 first downs, and convert 68% of 3rd downs (league average is 40%).

Alex played like a franchise QB at the end of the game. The strike to Kelce, the 4th and 10 conversion, the TD that tied the game, the 2 point conversion and the drive to get the winning FG.

No question. Because even a franchise QB doesn't pull off that drive more than half the time. Putting yourself in a 'do or die' situation where you have to score and get the conversion is a losing proposition far more often than it isn't.

He has to stop doing that and nobody's arguing it. But damn, he looked pretty good when he had to. That throw to Hill was 10 times harder than it looked. Across his body under pressure before the WR made his break. That was a nails throw by any measure and about as hard a play as you'll see a QB make. With the game (and any shot at the division) on the line, he made a baller-ass throw. Gotta tip your cap there.

Well yeah, but it's not as though our offense wasn't on fumes as well. Altitude's a bitch and those guy (Smith included) had been taking shots all night. Smith's willingness to stay in there and not check out on that game is commendable. He took a lot of hits and I'm pretty sure he wanted that game to be over just as much as any of the defenders he was facing. He's demonstrated uncanny resolve several times and I really think the road Buffalo game in 2014 was the best example of it. That's when I really noticed that the guy simply doesn't quit on games even when he sure appears to have every reason to do so.

For everything Smith isn't, he's a tough SOB and I'll always respect that about him.

Yeah, I'd just like to see him in that spot a little less often by virtue of making more plays in the first 3 quarters. Like I said - even the all timers can't count on completing that drive more than a fraction of the time.
