Chiefs confident Sammy Watkins, Patrick Mahomes are “starting to sync”

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins hasn’t caught a pass through the team’s first two preseason games and he failed to come back for a Patrick Mahomes pass that could have been a touchdown.

Coach Andy Reid noted that Watkins needs to do a better on plays like that, but he didn’t show much overall concern about how Watkins is fitting into the offense in his first year with the team. Reid said he loves Watkins’ “intensity on learning all the little, small things” and has seen that translate into good things at practice.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy had a similar take and said that he’s seen signs that Watkins and Mahomes are striking up a strong relationship.

“When it’s all said and done, Sammy is doing a heck of a job,” Bieniemy said, via ESPN.com. “He’s doing a great job. He’s accepted the challenge because we’re not just playing him at one position. He’s accepted the challenge of learning all three across the board. We want versatile football players. I know everybody wants to talk about what’s happening on the field on game day, but I will say this: Their communication, their rhythm is starting to sync.”

Mahomes agreed with the coaches about Watkins making strides even if they haven’t shown up in games. That’s easier to sell in preseason than in the regular season, which leaves the Chiefs with a couple of weeks to get everyone in line.

Agreed. I also wanted to help the secondary.

A couple good things about this situation now that we are here is that Watkins really doesn't have to light the world on fire. Even if can just pose a threat he would greatly help guys like Hill, Kelce, and most importantly Mahomes. And if somebody gets hurt we have depth.

Not saying it's worth 16 million a year when we had other pressing needs, but whether this has more benefits or not compared to fixing other positions, there still can be benefits.

Lol at folks judging Sammy off the back of THREE quarters's of football of which one of them he had no balls thrown his way and the other two quarters he had three targets with one over thrown and another thrown behind him. If you want to moan about the n zone throw then fine, but to write him off in preseason when he's barely had a chance to make a play is straight stupid and reactionary. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised as there was the same knee jerk reaction about the o line after the first game too smh.

The last thing Mahomes needs to trying to force feed a guy because of his contract. One of the reasons I hate the money we gave him. He better not do that.

In those 25 snaps Tyreek Hill had to slow down to catch a 70 yard pass.

But Watkins gets a pass cause vanilla and preseason and stuff.
