I always felt like he embodied in the fan base in the way he coached.

Sometimes he was a good coach, sometimes he was a shit coach, but I don't think there was ever a more dedicated or sincere coach who genuinely cared about this franchise beyond the paycheck as much as he did.

I remember before a game when he came back to coach defense for Vermeil we were in the EZ and he came up and told us to make sure and yell our heads off and not be like the wine drinking pussies in the nice seats.

Exactly. He honored every tradition not just to kiss ass he truly believed and loved it just like he did Lamar. They gave him his first and only HC job and he damn near drove him self insane but he never quit and he gave it all he had, not just talked the talk but walked the walk. His kids were devastated when DT died. He did better than many would have in such a situation in that second year especially.
