Never easy, but my last one, I had an in home vet visit for it. It was so much less traumatic. If anyone offers that service, I highly recommend it. She got to quietly leave on my bed, with my other dog and me comforting her.

No need to qualify. I have 2 cats because I travel way too much to have dogs. I love those cats as much as anyone loves their dogs, guaranteed. A family member is a family member. Sorry for your loss, hang in there. A lot of cats need a good home...when you're ready.

Oh Man, fur babies are such little heart breakers.
I had 2 lil boys (Wiener dogs), Diggity and Dexter. They grew up together and I had them for 14-15 years. Last Dec Digz passed from Kidney Failure. I was fortunate bc i was able to have a vet come to my home and do it there. Diggity was at peace, and on my chest while he passed. I was able to hold him and tell him how much I loved him and Dexter was at his side as well. As sad and difficult as it was, it was the least I could do for all the years of unconditional love he gave me The I watched Dexter grieve, and grieve hard, and there wasnt anything I could do. That was so incredibly heartbreaking. Then this past May, Dexter showed me it was time, but this time, I didnt have the luxury of waiting, I had to rush him ti the vet late at night bc he was in so much pain. AS soon as I walked into the vet with him, he started panicking, and I hated that for him. Then the vet gave me a button to push when I was ready for her to come back and do the deed. I call it the Button Of Death...After a dew more minutes of hugging him and telling him how much I loved him, I pressed the button..the vet was in the room in a matter of seconds, and a minute later, with Dexters face in mine and me whispering in his ear how much I loved him, he took his last breath. Again, it was hard, but theres no way the boys were gonna be alone in their last moments. Its the least I could do for all they've done for me. I dont have a dog yet, bc man thats a tough one. The Psychology of losing them has been a trip and something I didnt realize would be this incredibly hard. But it has been. Anyway, Im getting close to adopting tho....but for those who are staring this in the face, or when you have to make that decision, do everything you can to have it done at home. The difference between what Digz went thru and what Dexter went thru are vastly different, and I cry more over Dexter bc of the way he went. Digz had it good in that moment, no panic, just HIS home with HIS family. No brightly lit room with strangers and no Mama or Daddy Thats the gift you can give them for all they give you

I had one dog drop dead in front of me as I was trying to get him to go to the vet because he was ill. And believe me, that wasn't nearly as bad as taking his predecessor to the vet for The Final Deed. (Although to be fair, I was MUCH closer to the first dog than the second one, to the point that I had him cremated and his ashes reside in a nice box on my entertainment center.)
I'm convinced I suffered a bout of depression after I had him put down because he had cancer. I just didn't feel right afterward for several months, until it finally hit me that I was still feeling the effects. That lifted the cloud, but I still have an occasional pang of remorse. I have two dogs now, one about 10 or 11, the other a couple years younger. The oldest is steadily slowing down, and I once again am having to confront that possibility that it will be up to me to determine her fate. I'm glad the "home remedy" is more readily available now. I'm almost certain to go that route. I only wish I had done that for my first dog (and now I'm feeling guilty again over that). |

Well, I'm touched at all the posts of support. It just goes to show there's heart here; we will talk some smack, but when it comes to real stuff, you're all alright.
The update is-It looks like my Billie (after Billie Holliday, I always name my pets after favorite musicians) has a brain tumor-most likely. She's 16; i'm not spending a ton of money for MRI's and extensive testing. It doesn't really matter, you know? It's about her quality of life. At her age, it is what it is. She started eating again some, and isn't in pain. She's getting around the house a little better. She loves my girlfriend's daughters; and they've been loving on her something fierce. Billie decided to stick around a bit longer, I guess. So we get some more time. How much? I don't know. She's in better spirits for now; and I'll take it. thanks again, you guys. |
