RG position is wide open IMO. Smith has just as good of shot as either LTD or Long if what they say about best players will play. Smith would have been a day 2 pick without the blood clots. That starter material when you are talking IOL. Same applies to Niang at RT and Humphery at C. It looks to me like the more snaps these three could take as a unit in their natural positions to develop chemistry would be a good thing.

I get the rest of it. Being versatile is a good thing. Chemistry is too. Right now I prefer chemistry. Especially from these three.

There is no chance Smith starts this season. Zero. He’s a developmental guy like Allegretti but with higher upside.

He was a potential 2nd round draft pick with blood clot issues. Not talent issues. It's a bit higher than zero on his chances. Do I expect him to start? Probably not. But this is a great opportunity to build chemistry for the right 3/5 of our line going forward. You could work on the versatility the next few weeks when all of the cast of characters are back battling for spots.

Actually Trey Smith has a legit chance to start if he's given a fair shot

He’s well ahead of Allegretti. It’s less development and more hoping he doesn’t die because of blood clots. He absolutely has the talent to start.

There's not a chance that Smith will start at Right Guard before Kyle Long or LDT, unless of course it's due to injury and even then, I'd expect Veach to sign a veteran before throwing Smith out there after last season's offensive line woes.

The Chiefs had similar offensive line woes in 2014. They threw Fulton out there but sat LDT. It was the last year the Chiefs missed the playoffs and the line was so bad that there were no TD's by a WR all season long.

They'd move Thuney, Wiley, or Remmers to RG before Smith gets a chance this year.

Yep, or Allegretti or someone else with experience.

Look people, Tennessee is not the Tennessee of the past. They are 10-24 in the past 4 years in SEC games.

If his blood clotting issue is under control, Smith has serious upside but even then, he's not an NFL starting guard right now, especially on a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Smith is a bigger, longer guy and Nick won't get bigger so Smith is ahead there. I think they're both gritty, tenacious guys that aren't super nimble or athletic. Good run blocking, decent pulling, but get them to the second level and they look like infant giraffes.

I'm excited about Smith's development and think he's a steal. Barring catastrophe, he won't start this year. Next year, if he's installed, you have to like the balance along the line with strong run and pass blocking at various points.

Wrong.

This is the same line of horseshit you pulled with Mahomes, claiming that he'd start the season, then he'd start later in the season, blah, blah, blah, during his entire rookie season.

Just because you want something to happen doesn't mean it will happen, especially when you're dealing with coaches that have been doing things successfully for 20+ years.

Turns out I wasn't really wrong. You were clamoring for it too by the end of the season. I just had better long term vision that you.

And here. I just find it interesting and surprising. I'm not advocating he start. You just put those words in my mouth.

Game experience?

Mahomes has more arm talent than anyone in the league not named Rodgers or Brady.

Play him.

You still don't get it.

From the moment Mahomes was drafted, you were claiming that he was ready to start. You continued that all throughout Minicamps and Training Camp. You stated it every single week of the season and would not shut up about it.

When I made that post, the Chiefs were in the middle of a 4 game losing streak. They looked finished for the season (and for all intents and purposes, they were finished for the season). At that point, there was absolutely nothing to lose.

That is very different than what you posted for months and months and months and months.

And no, Trey Smith is not going to start Week 1 unless the Chiefs endure catastrophic injuries, again.

Normally, I’d agree with you here. This offseason is far different, though.

Neither LDT or Long played last year, so I think Smith does have a slim chance to win the job outright in camp. I honestly think he can outplay LDT right away and Long is a complete ?...if Long is as healthy as they say he is, it’s his job to lose.

Also, there are really 4 guys that will compete for RG

Long
LDT
Blythe
Smith.

Smith is the only one that played any snaps at RG last year and is under contract past next season.

I wouldn’t be as shocked as you’d be if he were to go out and win the job outright, but I agree it’s a long shot.
