Sure, they take into account tangible things like time left, down, and distance.

What the analytics can't capture is intangibles like momentum, fatigue, and player morale.

They're valuable for sure but kind of like playing a musical instrument, no amount of technique can make up for a lack of feel.

Sure. My point was just that time and score are central to the models, which he suggested weren't part of the equation.

All or nothing is a bad way to coach football games.

Like there's no way you can justify that kind of dumb shit especially on your first drive, or with so much game left to play.

Staley and Harbaugh are two of these all or nothing dudes.

Staley wasted the effort given on a massive kickoff return to start the game, which was immediately 3 free points. He just thumbed his nose at the kicker and gave the football away.

That's worse than something like a fumble or interception negating that great play. When you choose to say, I'm good with nothing if this play doesn't work, that's so much worse than just a regular turnover. You CHOSE to not get points.

Same with Ravens opening drive. Great drive. Drove the entire field, ate up half the first quarter, and chose to be good with the possibility of getting nothing. You just can't have that after that effort.

That's just dumbass football right there. As long as who has the most points determines who wins games, choosing not to take points when they're practically a guarantee, will always be the wrong move.

Your d gets a turnover off Mahomes, and instead of cashing in for 3 for your d, you roll the dice and lose. What a slap across the face to the d.

If you're looking at a punt or go for it, hey knock yourself out if you trust your defense. But to simply refuse to put points on the board, that's going to always be tough to explain both to ownership, and some of your players.

Especially if you lose a close contest.

That's why I think the 4th down at the end of the half was the worst of the calls by far (and Kollmann ended up saying the same).... by then, you're reading the situation that the Chiefs offense hasn't been great, you've already failed on 4th down a couple times and can go up by 7 to end the half.

That is my take on it. I am big into analytics but the analytics guys are starting to commit the same sins that they accuse the old fashioned coaches of doing. Aka all or nothing.

The best system is accounting for analytics and gut instinct.
