When were you “sold” that this team could make it back to the Super Bowl?

I always wondered what the Super Bowl bye week might feel like growing up. Now we all have had 3 over the last 4 years. In the 2019 season I was such a mess of nerves and was going crazy with the wait. The next year, I was having health problems and was a new Dad, which made that whole playoff run and COVID year a blur.

This year, I’m just trying to bask in the glow - and that’s exactly what this thread is. When was the moment you were sold that this team could go all the way? Check my spoiler’d answer below.

Spoiler!

NOTE: I totally accept the always correct answer that’s “we have Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, we ALWAYS can go all the way.”

If we're talking just this year?

Yeah, I could give the answer the OP referenced in the edit about Mahomes always giving you a shot, but it took awhile for this team to develop that same feeling of destiny that was present in 2019 and 2020 (even though they came up short with the OL issues).

To me, those moments come to be when the entire league looks at you and thinks, "Ohhhhhh.... shit..."

And as much as this was mocked as a close win against an inferior opponent, I gotta go with Kelce's 4 TD game against the Raiders because it truly revealed how we could still be an explosive offense in critical situations capable of epic comebacks just like the previous years. People may have been starstruck by Kelce and little else, but deep down that moment legit solidified that we would be a big, big problem.

Just my opinion, of course.

I loved that game. I said it then but it’s worth repeating that I haven’t heard our crowd that unhinged since the 90’s. It felt like our fans impacted a game in a way that didn’t feel possible in the modern era, a way that reminded me of watching film of Elway crying to the refs in the 90’s.

It also felt like the fans got to give a direct exorcism of Cheffers horrific officiating in Super Bowl 55. We got to let out a year and a half of frustration and it was beautiful to behold.

The day we traded up to take a QB in the first round of the draft.

For the Mahomes era, the game against SF when he made that pass.

This year, I honestly didn't know until we did. There were so many growing pains, and so few truly dominant games that I never had a "this team will go to the Superbowl for sure" like I had the last few years. But through Mahomes, all things are possible. Had to jot that down this season.

Sure, you hope the team can get there every year and of course, Patrick makes that chance exponentially higher but there were some pretty serious question marks about KC's pass rush and especially the secondary going into this year. To say "I knew it all along" is absolutely silly.

Playing Buffalo close in Week 6 put the seed in my head that maybe this team was better than I thought it would be.

Playing Cincinnati close, and really the Chiefs should have won it, in Week 13
sold me that this team at least had the potential to get to the Super Bowl.
It was absolute honesty. I always considered this a reloading year. We drafted pretty solid floor guys, but also guys who may have taken some adjustment time. Watson and Pacheco came alive fast, cook and chenal worked in then Williams and Moore showed up last week when it really mattered. We had not put complete games back to back all year until the playoffs. If we had drawn anyone but the Jags I would have had doubts getting out of the divisional round.

Also as many know I’ve been a massive Mahomes homer even before drafting him. I’m aware that with him our windows always open. Mid season I would have told you we would only make the Super Bowl if he gave us a series of over my dead body games. The last two weeks have been a pleasant surprise. We’ve got a tall task ahead that I’m a little pessimistic about.

Outside of the obvious Mahomes is inevitable…

I believed that losing Reek would ultimately make Mahomes a better QB, and I loved the youthful and talented additions to defense. I knew both would take time however (the defense more so than Patrick). I laughed at the notion that the Chiefs would finish at best third in the division. Still, with the changes and required growth, anything can happen in the playoffs. My moment was when Henne and the rest of the offense stepped up for Mahomes (after he has put the team on his back so many times) and drove 98 yards for a TD crushing a legit opportunity for Jax to gain some serious momentum. At that point it was obvious, we didn’t just have an uber HC and QB advantage, we had an actual team.

And while that moment did sell me, in the same vein, MVS finally stepping up last week when we needed him most as the rest of his position group was dropping like flies was just further confirmation of not only what the end result of that game would be but, what I believe the result of the next game to be as well.

This team is a contender as long as Patrick is 60% effective or better.

Anyone who bought into that rebuilding shit should be laughed at.

I made the mistake of rewatching that entire sequence.

My God that game is months old now and I'm STILL just as ****ing livid watching that piece of shit Cheffers make that call as when it happened.

I need to be getting ready for bed right now, not getting angry and hyped up.

Cheffers needs to be given a glorious continuous chorus of boos every ****ing game at Arrowhead from now on.

Yes exactly. This team has the mantle now that the Brady Patriots teams had, that even if you built a lead against them you know they are still (probably) going to win.

That gets in people's heads psychologically. The Chiefs have come back so many times and against such long odds that it's become something routine for them to do. The opponent can't really demoralize them, and instead is left waiting - almost expecting - something crazy and bad to go against them that puts the Chiefs ahead.

When you expect things to go wrong they often do, and I think that's an edge the Chiefs have on opponents right now.

We needed team wins more than ever this postseason. And half of our team showed up very unexpectedly. Spags and butker have been a complete surprise although we should stop being surprised at how good these 2 are

I believed we would be perennial Super Bowl contenders when I went to training camp with my son in 2017. I watched Patrick Mahomes II out play Alex Smith. Patrick did his thing running around in the backfield then threw a bomb to Alligator Arms that beat Marcus Peters for a touchdown. I have confidence every year we can win the Lombardi trophy. No doubt in my mind we will win multiple Super Bowls and be a dynasty with Patrick Mahomes II at quarterback.

I thought Patrick Mahomes II should have started his rookie year day one against the New England Patriots.

Everyone else can beat their chests, but I'm still a bit surprised they made it back to the Super Bowl. You always hold out hope, of course; but I was truly starting to believe once the defense started sacking Burrow in the 1st quarter of the AFC Championship Game.

Maybe it's all those years of conditioning where I expected things to go horribly wrong, and sure enough....they did.

You'd think I'd have gotten rid of that by now five years into the Mahomes Regime, but....nah....

It's still unbelievable to think we're going to our 3rd Super Bowl in 4 years, when there was such a wasteland of playoff failure.

With Reid and Mahomes I thought we had a chance before last year's SB was played.
