Maybe he's on the fence and left open the door for one last gigantic payday making it worth it. Also not clear what ramifications would be regarding his guaranteed money if he retired while still under contract.

He's not going to have 50m in the bank, unless he's never paid taxes or his agent a percent of his contracts, or spent a penny.

I can't imagine pissing away 25-30m, but people have managed to do it.

If he was broke I think he'd be in a Jets uniform right now. And yeah, call it $20M in the bank after taxes and agents and living a nice lifestyle. You can still live as a rich person with that amount.

This is why the whole situation is weird - why is he agitating for a new contract if he has 20m in the bank?

I agree if he was broke he would be playing.. but if he is flush why is he playing hard ball to get more money

EDIT: I also can't quite tell how career earnings is reported, I think it might include future cash under the current contract, so it's possible that 20m of those 50m "career earnings" might have been due in the 2024 season, of which he would have received zero so far.

Maybe because he only wants to risk head and body injuries on a daily basis if it's for an obscene amount of money.

Typically career earnings are reported strictly as cash earnings.

So if he has a signing bonus of $50 million, for instance, that's $50 million in earnings for that season even though it's not $50 million on the team's cap (yet).

So from what I can see he's actually been paid about $51-52 million in career cash earnings through salary and signing bonuses.
