In fairness to Cook, if the D-line isn't going to generate pressure, you need world beaters playing CB and safety. Last year they had a better secondary and a pass rush. Hence the success defensively.

This team has more money invested in the D-line than in the secondary. The line needs to start playing better.

Hopefully, he’ll bring some experience & situational awareness to the secondary. Whether it’s man coverage or zone, the current roster does not have a ball hawk. The secondary seems to be out of sync and out of position on a lot of those mid to deep receptions. I can’t remember the last time the secondary made an interception vs a good offense. Maybe I’m just getting old.

The only dude on the team getting torched more than Conner is Reid. I suppose argue Johnson is right there but that's on yards more than completion percentage. They're the biggest problems with our pass defense. I'm not giving up on Conner as a safety, but he sure as shit isn't a nickel. And Reid... well they aren't about to bench him (even though they should)....

He's had a good career and last two years. Hope he's been in shape because he's gonna be 32 when we play in the Super Bowl. Anyone know any good 32 year old corners? I don't.

100% and I remember us both saying it at the time. I can probably cut him some slack and say maybe the injury hasn't helped, but nah, not a 2nd rounder, and not above Raimann

It's definitely rhe worst part of the defense. The secondary feels like it's an average outside corner away from being able to rejig positions and function OK. DL needs an above average DE and probably another DT.

Uche has juice. He's still young. He could have a legitimate future here as the complementary speed rusher we really need. And yet we just won't send him out there.

And it's not as though he can't do it. This isn't a Neil Farrell thing where hell, the guy might just be bad at football.

Uche has BEEN that guy. He's been a damn effective pass rusher and he perfectly complements the sort of guys in Jones, Karlaftis and Omenihu who can pressure a QB but maybe not impact the play as greatly. Those guys all have surprisingly low EPA per pressure; their rushes aren't impacting the plays as much as one would expect.

Maybe put someone with some real speed out there who can mop up and/or push the QB forward by coming up the arc.

It's one of the stranger things I've seen this team do in a bit.
I'm not sure Karlaftis or Omenihu should surprise us. Karlaftis just doesn't have a single, real calling card. He's not winning with speed, get off, bend, power, leverage or great hand usage and technical ability. He wins by not stopping and when the secondary gives the DL about 5 seconds to rush. He's a mid-level player that is good at everything but great at nothing. Perfectly fine as a 2nd tier Jack of all trades, but that's him.

Omenihu on the other hand is just inconsistent, and always has been. He IS explosive when rushing at DT and he has games he looks great, but then he'll follow it up with a game he forgets how to tackle. Again, fine complementary type guy but not a consistent problem for an OL.

Can't fault the focus they've had on DL, but it really is Jones and a lot of average. Uche is just a head scratcher because man do we need speed.
