This is actually old news, believe it or not, that title was leaked back when they were trying to decide which one to use (there was a 3rd, I don't remember it). Fanboys have been bitching about the alien part of the film for a looooonng time now, saying science fiction doesn't belong in Indiana Jones.

(I apologize if the alien thing's a spoiler for anybody, but I think everybody here has seen the crystal skull which looks like a 'grey')

Scifi in Indy is fine, just as long as he's not shaking hands with little green men.

Little green men from Mars, anyhow.

But, Mr. GoChiefs, I'm sure you'll agree that it's okay for him to shake hands with little green men from Damascus. They're still trying to work out the problems with their nuclear reactor and it's good for celebrities to visit them in the hospital and stuff.

Yeah, they had someone at TheAVClub who'd never seen RotLA watch and review the series for their 'Better Late than Never' series of reviews.
Brought up that Temple of Doom had it's dark tone and subject matter because Lucas had so much luck with it [as the 2nd in a trilogy] in the SW series [ie, ToD was supposed to be the 'Empire Strikes Back' of the series], while Speilberg wanted to continue in the B-Movie/serial vein.

As I noted earlier, the plan wasn't to do a "darker" Indy film. It happened because Lucas was going through a terrible divorce, hence the "ripping out of hearts" by the main baddie.

And it wasn't as commercial as the first one and the third one. But it was an important thing that he wanted to do, and I certainly deferred to George's better judgment because he had seen this three-movie arc and this is what he wanted to do and I was his director for hire."
