George Lucas' Indiana aliens

George Lucas' Indiana aliens
George Lucas wanted to call the new 'Indiana Jones' film 'Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men From Mars'.

The film's producer had his idea firmly rejected by actor Harrison Ford and director Steven Spielberg as the three men struggled to reach an agreement for around 10 years.

Spielberg said: "There was a point where I thought George and I would never agree on the story, and I was fine with that.

"George and I are best friends, and we always argue, and we always debate. That's been the nature of our relationship since we met in 1967."

'Star Wars' director Lucas had commissioned Jeb Stuart - who wrote the script for 'Die Hard' - to write his version, which saw Indy go up against Russian agents and had a climatic battle scene between the US army and alien flying saucers.

Ford added: "It takes time to get Steven, George and me on the same page. George is very stubborn with his ideas."

'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' is released on May 22.

Seriously, I just don't get it.

Keanu is kind of "campy". A very guilty pleasure of mine is "Point Break". Even though his acting is awful, I can never turn that movie off once it's on my TV.

I can't say that about any of Hayden's performances and his scenes in the prequel are extremely difficult for me to watch.

Why didn't ANYONE notice that while filming? Even Spielberg thinks Hayden is "special".

Special at what, exactly?

I've always felt that RotJ had the best PARTS of all the movies - the scenes between the Emperor, Vader and Luke. The scene where Luke charges out of hiding, attacks Vader and backs him across the room is the apex of the entire series. I remember sitting in the theater gape-jawed the first time I saw it.

Unfortunately, it was all mixed up with the killer teddy bear horseshit.

And for all the punks who think the special effects in the original Star Wars suck, you have no idea how groundbreaking they were at the time. You're all spoiled by CGI and take it all for granted, but that movie changed everything. The thrill of watching the opening scene in dark theater as a little kid lost in wide-eyed wonder is something you'll never experience, and it's your loss.

I sometimes like Keanu, his style is perfect for certain roles...i thought he was actually quite good in Point Break & the Matrix.

Haden is plain terrible, its hard to say why those greats like him...i always want to laugh at him in the fight scene in "Sith"...where he's supposed to be angry & arguing with Padme & Obi-Wan..."YOUR. TRYING. TO. TURN. HER. AGAINST. ME."

HAHAHA

I know, Dude.

What should have been epic scenes are campy, corny and contrite.

Why couldn't Lucas have hired Ryan Gosseling instead?

I'm totally with on Star Wars (1977) and Empire Strikes Back (which I saw on opening day at the Midland Theater in downtown KC).

But Return was just a mess. Lucas had been sick at the time, wrote a poor story, didn't oversee the script and hired the wrong director. IMO, it was a completely pitiful way to end a six-story arc.

It's still better than any of the prequels. I love Jedi. I don't even mind the ewoks and I love everything about Jabba's Palace. It's a world unto itself. It should have it's own TV show. I'm a sick bastard.

Wow, I remember seeing Empire downtown at that theater too. I dont think it was opening day, but i remember waiting in a huge long liine with my mom and best friend. People dont really have to do that anymore since big movies play on soo many screens these days. Ahhh...the good ole days.

They do in Los Angeles.

There are HUGE lines for movies like Star Wars at the Chinese Theater. El Capitan (Disney's flagship theater in Hollywood) has lines for blocks when movies like Monster's, Inc., Nemo and Pirates of the Caribbean are released.

It's probably not like that in other cities but movies are HUGE in Los Angeles. There's billboards up for movies that won't be released for months out here. I've seen Indy Billboards up on Cahuenga since February.

You probably love it because it reminds of your childhood.

I have a very difficult time believing that if you viewed all six movies for the first time at your current age that you'd feel the same way.

I didn't even see them in a theater the first time. I think I was 11 years old the first time I saw Jedi.

I dunno, I just like the Palace. There are some great novels written about it. Intergalactic crime syndicates = AWESOME.

Yes, the Black Sun and Xixor are cool.

But the palace scene in "Jedi" plays like an outtake of the muppet show.

(I apologize if the alien thing's a spoiler for anybody, but I think everybody here has seen the crystal skull which looks like a 'grey')
Yeah, they had someone at TheAVClub who'd never seen RotLA watch and review the series for their 'Better Late than Never' series of reviews.
Brought up that Temple of Doom had it's dark tone and subject matter because Lucas had so much luck with it [as the 2nd in a trilogy] in the SW series [ie, ToD was supposed to be the 'Empire Strikes Back' of the series], while Speilberg wanted to continue in the B-Movie/serial vein.

Anecdote: I was working out at my gym in 2002, just before the release of AOTC. And while I was on the exercise bike, Hayden comes in and chooses the bike the right next me. We had a brief conversation (nothing important).

I talked to a director friend of mine later that night and told him that I ran into Hayden at the gym. His response:

"Was he unconvincing as himself?"

His uncomfortable-ness was tailor made for Shattered Glass, though.

hahaha

To Lucas's credit, he did try to tone down the kiddy cheesiness of it all by changing the songs in that scene and the Ewok one in the special editions.

I hate how he inserted Hayden Suckinson at the end of RoTJ though. Good god, awful...
