Because the Pats showed they're not overly concerned with experience (they kept Cassel on the roster despite having no major college experience). The fact that New England cut him again just goes to show that a really good NFL team with real good personnel guys didn't think he was worth keeping around.

Let me again pose this question because I have yet to hear a good answer. If Guiterrez had any hint of an upside, then why would NE cut him for a bunch of nobodies?

If Thigpen had any hint of upside, why would MN, who has less talent at the QB position than anyone in the league not named KC, throw him in the trash?

A few things:
-You're comparing the Vikings to the Pats. The Vikings had to keep extra "ready now" QBs on the roster because they didn't trust Tarvaris Jackson (hence, why Frerotte made the roster over Thigpen). They even had a QB controversy. Also, while the Pats have a history of smart personnel decisions, the Vikings have a history of continually botching the QB evaluation (e.g. Favre anybody? Tarvaris Jackson?)
-Second, the Vikes cut Thigpen after one preseason before they had an extensive chance to evaluate him. The Pats cut Guiterrez after two full seasons of evaluation. It's also been widely speculated that the Vikings hoped Thigpen would clear waivers.

So again, when real good personnel guys like those on the Pats have two years to evaluate a QB and decide that he's garbage, even when they have pretty lousy options behind him, that's a huge red flag.

I don't know about you, but it doesn't take me too many whiffs to realize I'm smelling a pile of shit.

The fact that Gut stuck around a little bit and was immediately picked up by the "old" regime in KC says that there was something of promise there.

We have to see. Again, realize that the Chiefs also picked up Vince Redd and cut him. We have no idea if Guiterrez was brought in to seriously compete for a roster spot or if he was just signed because he could bring in competition and be a long shot for a roster spot. It's not like Pioli had to make any kind of effort to bring him in.

We could spin it any way we want to. But it just doesn't sound like New England had any hint of confidence in the guy. I mean, they drafted a QB in 2008 and then went out and grabbed two QBs this offseason. Not a very strong vote of confidence in Guiterrez.

A stretch is saying Mugsy Bogues is almost as tall as Manute Bol.

It is "generally expected" that the Chiefs will claim former Patriots quarterback Kevin O'Connell off waivers, NFL.com reports.

Recommendation:
The Chiefs and Broncos are presumed to have interest in O'Connell, and the report indicated that Denver might try to swing a trade with New England for a draft pick to prevent O'Connell from landing with a division rival. "I can't imagine (Patriots coach) Belichick just giving away (last year's) third-round pick," one league source, referring to O'Connell's 2008 draft position, said. "He's going to try to squeeze (Broncos coach) McDaniels for a pick."

All you had to do was look at Madden 2010 to know that. It has Gailey listed with a negative effect on QBs. And we all know that if the programmers at EA Sports say it is so, then it is so. They are the true litmus test of all things NFL.

Seriously, Gailey gets credit for the last year's "wildcat" and rightfully so. But I'm not sure that I'd be too anxious to keep any coach associated with a 2-14 record.

As we recently explained, only two teams had priority over the Chiefs in the waiver process relating to former Patriots quarterback Kevin O'Connell: the Lions and the Rams.

We thought the Rams possibly would consider O'Connell. We regarded the Lions as an unlikely candidate to claim him.

So, of course, Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe reports that the Lions claimed O'Connell.

The move becomes even more curious given that the Lions signed quarterback Brooks Bollinger on Tuesday.

But with Daunte Culpepper nursing a toe injury and Drew Stanton being evaluated for a knee injury, the Lions need other quarterbacks to complement Matthew Stafford for the preseason finale.

It's also possible that the Lions will try to flip O'Connell to the Chiefs or the Broncos for a low-round draft pick.
