Cassel's contract

Okay, he signs for $63 million over 6 years. Eye popping #'s but lets look closer....

We have an announced $28 million guaranteed for the length of the contract.

$10 million roster bonus last year.(Basically a signing bonus). USA Today doesn't list this in their DB. Info is from the KC Star.

2009: $15 million paid out in salary(USA Today database)
2010: $16 million salary.(Widely published figure)

I'm not down on Cassell. I think the jury is still out on whether he will be a successful NFL QB for the next 10 years.

Just curious with all the Claussen rumors and Pioli saying they designed the contract to have all this front end money in an uncapped year. But, was it also so if he flops, it doesn't kill the cap in the future?

Just what will it cost us in salary/dead money to cut him after the 2010 season? Looks like to me thats its not a cap killer. But, does anyone know the #?

Assuming that he is cut/traded next year, there could be a new CBA with a cap. Still, the contract is structured to give very little cap hit at that point.

I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. It's hard to tell whether or not he can play the position when he can never stay on the field. When he has played, he's looked okay at times and he's looked horrible at times.

I think he's falling into the 2nd string quarterback category where people remember fondly, instead of realistically. The more attention people pay to the starter, the more the 2nd qb on the roster changes from scrub to legend-in-waiting.

I still think he's a better QB than Cassel. We'll never know.

It doesn't matter about Croyle, he never in his career will be a starting QB. The only thing he has proven is he cannot play a full season without getting hurt. Teams cannot take the risk on him to be their starter, he is nothing more than a career journeyman back-up.

The higher the base salary the easier the player is to cut, it's the bonus money that kicks your ass.

IIRC i was the first one saying that the deal was made with an out after the second year. during the discussion where most were calling me an idiot without looking at the actual numbers and comparing them to the franchise #s for two seasons Big Rock stepped in and threw out all of the figures. Im sure someone can find them with a search

I was under the impression (per Sully) that if we cut Cassel after 2010 that we wouldn't lose a dime. I don't know where he got that from, but when we were talking about it, that's what he said.

Thats what I'm trying to figure out. How much of that $31 million he will be paid in 2009-2010 is guaranteed money?
