The special effects are purrty but there's only so much "LOOK OUT! THE END OF THE WORLD IS RIGHT BEHIND US! *looks in rearview mirror as landmark comes down nearer to the car/plane* WHOOOOAAAA" I can take.

I'm watching a movie right now called City Dragon. I recommend that each of you see this film; it is reprehensibly awful.

Yeah, Dogville was a barrell of laughs. Like you though, I thought it was well done. I also thought Nicole Kidman did a really good job in it.

In The Brethren by Bob Woodward, you can read about how the Supreme Court used to have movie days to settle obscenity questions. Some funny stuff available.
"A moviehouse operator in Albany, Georgia, had been convicted and fined $750 for showing the R-rated film Carnal Knowledge. Here was a movie that was clearly not obscene. It was pure Hollywood establishment and had no explicit sex. The film had been directed by the highly regarded Mike Nichols, was on many critics' "Ten Best" lists, and actress Ann-Margret had been nominated for an Oscar. A screen was set up, and several Justices attended the special showing. As the film progressed, there was little of the usual cackling, running commentary or leg slapping. "I thought we were going to see a dirty movie," Marshall complained at the end of the movie. "The only thing obscene about this movie is that it is obscenely boring," said White. The Chief had left early. He told his clerks the camera work and the lighting had been well done. Rehnquist said he liked the music." |

So I haven't quite gotten a handle on Antichrist yet after having watched it. Like, I can't tell whether it is misogynistic or not. This is a film that is deeply symbolic (at the expense of character for moralism, one might argue), gorgeously shot and achieves quite the atmosphere. There is a visceral anti-psychological therapy theme. The film is loaded with sexual violence. The acting is damn good.
I just haven't pieced it all together yet. I need to think more about Biblical allusion and allegory. |

you should. My father in law was over recuperating from surgery and wanted to see it, otherwise I'd have never rented it.

Watched Where the Wild Things Are last night. I really enjoyed it, but for some reason I thought it was going to be better.

And I actually assumed the plane would water land and then get rescued by the cruise ship, and was surprised when that didn't happen. Which basically made 2012 less predictable than Avatar. |

Just finished Harsh Times (2005 - Christian Bale, Freddie Rodriguez). That was really quite a stunning performance from both Bale and Rodriguez. Great character study film, dark. Definitely worth a rent if you want to get back to watching Bale be good at acting.

if any of you guys have kids, Ponyo is really, really good.
I took my kids to the theater to see it, and they were in a trance. Probably because its alot different than the CG animated flicks that kids are used to these days. |

You don't need kids to enjoy a Miyazaki film either.
