Post what you like/dislike about your current job/career

I'm thinking seriously about a major career change. If I do it, it looks to be a major change from what I'm used to and where I expected myself to be.

I'm 26 and don't have extensive work experience, so evaluating what may be different about the other career path inherently comes with more uncerainty than a change in jobs in the same industry.

As a result, I'm looking for additional considerations that I may be missing. If you could post what you like/dislike about your current job/career, I would appreciate it. Feel free to go into as much detail as you feel comfortable. Include if you're self employed, approx how many people are in your direct department, industry etc.

Any and all insight is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have been, but this is a permanent gig, I'm tired of all the bullshit on the administrative end of things. Have been for years actually, but I had to find the right situation if I was to work for someone else. This is an opportunity to kinda expand my horizons a bit.

I've only been here 4 weeks and the 6PM to 6AM 12 hour shifts 4 days a week are getting pretty F***ing old. My biological clock is completely screwed right now.

I love my job. I provide electricity to the masses. I also work 12 hour shifts. We work what is known as a "Dupont Schedule" Since we are rotating shifts I do have to work some nights, weekends and holidays which sucks sometimes. But every 4 weeks I get 7 days off in a row.

I can't imagine what it would be like to get off only on Saturday and Sunday. One of the great things about our shift schedule is being off in the middle of the week. A lot the things I like to do I can do on a weekday when everyone else is at work. Things like Golf, Skiing, and Christmas shopping are so much easier on a Tues or Wed.

Pros: Great pay and benefits, Schedule allows me to do much more with my off time. I really love my job.

Cons: Some of the dumbasses I work with. (Pretty common I bet), Working nights, weekends and Holidays sucks sometimes. Schedule does prevent doing things like joining a Trap League or Softball team.

I love the job I have right now. It's the second best job I have ever had and for this period in my life it's nearly perfect.

My official job Title is: Guest Experience Champion ( GEC ), in layman's terms I'm the Concierge. The company I work for owns 5 different hotels/guest ranches in Wyoming. The property I work at has 349 rooms on site. 189 in the actual Hotel I'm at, 92 cabins next door and 68 rooms in an adjoining hotel. We are the largest property in Cody, and the second largest in the state.

It's a really cool gig, as I'm one of the Sr Department managers, directly under the GM/Owner. But unlike the other managers ( Food & Beverage, maintenance ect..) my staff is only 2-6 other employees. So I don't have to deal wit of the petty employee issues that they do. Yet have all the benefits that go with the position.

Basically my job is to take care of the guests and VIP's in particular. I handle all guest complaints, problems and requests. I get to meet a lot of really cool & Interesting people and the occasional famous one also. The pay is really good and above average for the area. The people I work for are the best employers I have ever had. I get to dress nice, suit & tie, everyday and have to do very little if any actual physical work. I spend 90% of my work day just walking around hanging out and talking to people. the other 10% of the time I spend either at my desk doing paperwork, research ect and a very small amount of time actually having to deal with problems. We have such a great staff that the majority of problems I do deal with are simply people that are going to me unhappy no matter what...lol

The only really suck part of the job is the hours I work. During the busy tourist season, May through Sept, I work split shifts everyday. This means I go in at 5:30 am till 10am, then come back and work 4pm to 9-11pm. I average about 50hrs a week with some weeks hitting 60hours if we are really busy. But other than that I can't complain at all about it. And really the only reason the hours are a pain is because I'm a single dad and babysitting is sometimes hard to find with those hours.

The only other job I have ever had that was better was when I worked as a Paramedic, and the hours there were even worse.

I switched careers 6 years ago. I spent 20 years working on cars and now I teach automotives.

Pros;
Not dealing with customers
Not working in the heat/cold
No long hours
Not having to deal with flat rate pay
Benefits
Time off
Less demanding on my body
Get paid to talk about cars
Cons;
Dealing with students that know more than I
Dealing with administrators that have no idea how shops work
Advancement is limited
4 days working 11 to 15 hours each
Pay is so so

I work as a janitor type guy at a community center at night, and a playing card sorter during the day.

Both jobs suck, I get few days off, overtime is a bitch, but the money is coming in and that's what matters.
