Herm Edwards gives glowing review of new Patriots safety Jarrad Page

Herm Edwards is the big fan of Jarrad Page, the newest member of the New England Patriots.

I'm starting to see why.

The Boston Herald caught up with the ESPN analyst, who coached Page in Kansas City from 2006-2008, to see what type of insight he could offer on the 2006 seventh-round pick.

What are the Patriots getting? According to Edwards, a player that should immediately fit in and thrive with the Patriots.

”They’re getting a very smart football player, and (Patriots coach) Bill (Belichick) likes smart players. He’s got great instincts. He can play in the box. He can cover tight ends. But his ball skills are what really make him stand out a little bit ahead of a lot of other guys. He’s got great anticipation. He’s just a really good football player. I really liked him.”

Page was acquired Saturday from the Chiefs for an undisclosed future draft pick to help ease the loss of Brandon McGowan, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a chest injury.

It's yet to be seen if Page is as talented as McGowan, but his skill set is similar enough that he should be able to glaze over the loss.

Plus, he can hit hard. Really, really hard.

I have to say the safety position has been the most befuddling story for me to follow with the new regime. Going into the 2009 season, would anybody here have listed safety as one of our top 5 problem areas? To me it was clear that Page was solid, and Pollard was pretty average, but sometimes frustratingly inconsistent.

Next thing we know Pollard is cut, Page is in the doghouse. Mike Brown is starting and Jon McGraw is getting playing time. Berry is obviously an upgrade. Lewis seems to have the upside of being Page. Just seems like the egos or something not football-related got in the way with the Chiefs handling of Page.

Berry/Page would have been a pretty damned good tandem, with Lewis learning and growing into the job. And no sign of Jon McGraw unless somebody gets hurt.

Disagree. IMO Lewis has shown very good football instincts for a rook and even though Page played TE's like Gates well and grabbed a few timely picks, that Page/Pollard combo whiffed on an embarrasing number of tackles as Chiefs. It was downright awful at times.

Being complimented by Herm Edwards is like being told your attractive by a queer uncle or cousin.

I agree with him. The compensation in question should be the higher of the two 1st round picks that the Patriots own.

Belichick doesn't have Berry, and didn't have Page holding out for a new contract.

I thought Page looked promising in his first season, but he doesn't seem to have progressed much since then. I think the guy probably has the athleticism to be a starting NFL safety, and much like Pollard can probably be a role player for some team for years. But considering his demands for a new salary in conjunction with the addition of Berry and Lewis (who looks similar to a rookie Page), there's really no argument for keeping the guy.

Don't make this fundamental mistake. NFL teams can only carry a certain number of guys, and not necessarily all that they could want in a perfect world. Maybe you know someone is going to get squeezed out and can't **quite** make your team, but would make another team, so if you can get a late round pick, why not.

And sometimes injuries affect things in weird ways. Because there's no DL except PUP and IR, you may have an injured OL who is going to be back in 4 weeks, so instead of carrying the 8 guys you planned, you have to carry 9, so now you need to go from 7 LB to 6. So Joe Linebacker gets cut because Mike OLineman got hurt?! Yep. Welcome to the NFL.

They should have let the baby rot on the bench instead of rewarding him by sending him to a contender.....I liked Page, but clearly the guy had an elevated opinion of himself or perhaps he asked Herm what his value "should" be.

Eh, I rate it at just a notch or two below a "glowing Pioli review" these days.
