I have mixed feelings about Dick Clark.

His input into the rise of rock and roll was incredibly important. But he was also a sell out and a fink. He implicated Alan Freed in the 1950's payola scandals, and he got off scot free for his finkery. Alan Freed died of alcoholism in his early 40's after his career was destroyed.

So the guy was far from a saint. But he did give many bands their big break, and exposed white kids to black rock n rollers (like Alan Freed did).

Not really "scot free", Clark was forced to sell his shares in ABC records, after the implication, due to "conflict of interest", at ABC's request, costing him nearly 8 Millions Dollars.
