Let's say, as has been rumored, that Bowe is genuinely looking for Megatron money.

Now, in case you've been living under a rock, Megatron got a seven year deal worth $134 million dollars, with $60 million guaranteed. It is the biggest contract in NFL history.

You are Scott Pioli, and you've got 'til July to get him signed to avoid paying him a $9 million franchise tag this year. You probably don't want to tag him for two straight years, as (a.) he's saying he's going hold out until you do sign him, and (b.) Branden Albert will be a free agent next year if you do.

Trading is also an option, but no team in the NFL wanted him for a 1st rounder when you tried to trade him during the draft's first day, if you believe those rumors. No team wanted to burn a 1st on Mike Wallace, either. So you're not getting a first if you try to trade him.

Explain the process by which you try to resolve this issue, all you Piolis out there.

Are you going to give him the contract he wants? Or close?

What is his contract worth to you? How do you intend on getting him down to that?

Are you going to try to trade him? What are you going to trade him for?

I know we're all going to love criticizing Pioli for whatever he does here, but it'd help if you outline what YOU'D do in his shoes.

Because this could potentially be a terrible situation.

IF ... Bowe wants megatron money then i think you ride the tag out this year.

Next year, you use a lesser tag(matching tag?) or you open it up and let Bowe's agent shop it around to show him what he would get. If he can really get that kind of offer you let him go and take the draft picks. If not, then maybe Bowe drops his price.

If he walks, you're just going to get one draft pick, at the bottom of the 3rd.

Bowe has to know teams aren't going to pay him Megatron money. He's just not going to get it. Hell, he has to know he's not going to get Larry Fitzgerald money from teams, either.

I think he's being far more reasonable than people give him credit for. How do we know Pioli isn't just being a cheap bundle of sticks? According to BossChief's inside guy the team was close to an extension during the season. The Megatron deal isn't Pioli's fault, no, but he had to know that the team was going to have to dip into the coffer a bit to get Bowe a new contract. Not every contract can be as cheap as the Hali deal. Or hell, the ****ing Charles deal. So I DO blame Pioli partly for not getting a contract with Bowe done.

If Megatron has a long-term deal worth 134 million, we need to be ready to give as much as 80 million to Bowe over many years. 10 mill/year is worth it, I think.

If Pioli doesn't think it's worth it so he can out-Patriot the Patriot Way of not overpaying on contracts, then yes, he absolutely deserves blame.

That's a random limit I threw out there (80 million) but I don't think it's so bad. And it depends on Bowe's company being reasonable. I think he is based on the way he conducts himself in practice and his diligence to the team. I don't think we should assume Bowe is a greedy asshole.

If he is, then I don't know. I guess we'll find out when he goes to a different team either through trade or through just letting him walk. We'll find out the numbers of his new contract with the new team and we'll only then be able to figure out if Pioli did the right thing.

They keep saying "keep bowe"... "bowe is great with a real QB" etc

but right now, do you pay Bowe Megatron money or let him walk?

5 for 60 is only a half mil lower on average per yr.

I think I'd probably end up cutting him after the 6th year. Not real sure.

If you're Bowe, you have to figure "what do I have to gain by holding out."

If I'm waving an $80 million contract for 7 years, I don't think he gains enough, if anything at all, holding out.

I'd pay him the tag money for this year, see how motivated he is & worry more about aquireing a franchise QB. I don't have a problem with a year to year while we are still in limbo with the QB. Betime we ever draft a QB he will be expendable. Sucks to be us, I'd like him to have a long term deal but I want a franchise QB and if we can trade him to help us get that then he would be worth letting go.
