NFL looking to adjust Rooney Rule
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/88...sure-diversity
There has been plenty of turnover in coach and general manager positions in the NFL this offseason, but the league acknowledged Friday that teams can do better when it comes to hiring minorities. NFL vice president of human resources Robert Gulliver said the league is looking at making adjustments to the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview a minority before making a hire. Of the eight new head coaches and seven general manager jobs that have been filled since the end of last offseason, none have gone to a minority. The Jets have yet to officially hire a new GM, though sources tell ESPN that it will be Seahawks executive John Idzik, who is also not a minority. Mike Tomlin of the Steelers, Marvin Lewis of the Bengals and Leslie Frazier of the Vikings are the only black coaches among the 32 teams. "While there has been full compliance with the interview requirements of the Rooney Rule and we wish the new head coaches and general managers much success, the hiring results this year have been unexpected and reflect a disappointing lack of diversity," Gulliver said. "The Rooney Rule has been a valuable tool in expanding diversity and inclusion in hiring practices, but there is more work to do, especially around increasing and strengthening the pipeline of diverse candidates for head coach and senior football executive positions. "We have already started the process of developing a plan for additional steps that will better ensure more diversity and inclusion on a regular basis in our hiring results. We look forward to discussing these steps with our advisers to ensure that our employment, development and equal opportunity programs are both robust and successful." |

Sorry Romeo screwed up the percentage of black head coaches, Mr. Gulliver. But he was let go because he had no idea why we couldn't win a damn game or how to resolve the problem. I don't give a flying **** if our head coach is an Asian cross dressing transvestite with pink hair and wearing stilettos. I just want a return for my investment to the team with a coach who knows how to motivate and properly coach a team. Enough of this Affirmitive Action BS.... Best man gets the job regardless of skin color or sexual preference. Owners aren't going to hire a guy just because he's the best canidate OF HIS RACE. And as a fan I want the best option on the field to make my Sundays less miserable.
Now, make the Chief fans happy and draft a black quarterback #1 overall, and we'll all be happy.

For a minute there, I thought you were going to require a certain amount of white guys on a team, like with a rule or something. But equally dim-minded is the thought that "talking about color" is what causes men's hearts to tend towards racism. |

The Rooney Rule is stupid.
Any team would do what every they could to sign Mike Tomlin if he was available. You know what I mean. Do we really think the NFL is keeping the black coach down? There are only 32 head coaching jobs. There are only 32 GM jobs. It's not going to be representative of anything because its too small of a club. The NFL should instead celebrate that one of its best coaches is black (Tomlin). The NFL should celebrate that on of its best general managers is black (Newsome). And tell Tony Dungy to quit bitching and start coaching if he wants more blacks roaming the sidesline. You too Herm. That dude could be a damn good coordinator but he would rather be a celebrity. I'm so sick of this $hit. |

Someone should hire Clay Travis as their head coach, he is a gay Muslim, that takes care of two birds with one stone.

We know that talented players don't often make the best coaches. So if it's a different skill set, then maybe there doesn't have to be a strong correlation between the racial ratios of players and coaches. No one really gets mad that 67% NFL players are African American. That just seems normal even if the US population is only 13% African African American. There obviously some reason we have a far larger ratio of African-American NFL athletes, but I'd guess it's based more on interest and talent than racism. Is it possible that the ratio of coaches more closely resembles the national ratio because of a different playing field in terms of talent and interest? Right now about 9% of the coaches are African American, but last year it was about 15% (2% higher than the national ratio). It seems to me that maybe there should be more study put into that before forcing a more divisive rule than the one we already have. Just a thought. |
