The Lost Family of Russia
Came across this doing a bit of surfing and really wanted to share, its one of the more fascinating stories i've read in a while, a Russian family moves deep into the Siberian forest to escape religious persecution and eventually end up basically living as cavemen.
Sorry to be the retread who doesnt know how to lay out the print, but if you can be bothered to click the link its an interesting read... http://www.smithsonianmag.com/histor...188843001.html |

Fascinating.
Recognizing that they may not have been in the most friendly of terrains, it's interesting to me that a family of six people suffered starvation when there were no other humans within 150 miles. It makes you think about how few humans could really be supported on earth in a true subsistence lifestyle.

I have to think that fish played a major role in their diet, even though its not mentioned in the story, to have such a presumably abundant resource outside their door and not use it? it doesnt make sense in the context of them saying that the late 50's were "the hungry years". But you're right, if some modern catastrophe happened today and all of the sudden thousands of people were trying to make their living off the land in this country?... it'd be incredibly tough. |
