And also because trading down relinquishes the power of getting YOUR guy. If you're Andy Reid and you're convinced Geno Smith or Matt Barkley can give you what Donovan McNabb gave you for 10 years or more, is it worth risking that to move down and pick up an extra second round pick this year and a first round pick of unknown value NEXT year? There are so many teams with QB needs - Jacksonville, Oakland, Philadelphia in the top 5, throw in Arizona, Buffalo and New York Jets in the top 10 - that you could see TWO guys go between your original slot and your new, trade-down slot. Trading down just isn't on the table.

No one will want to trade up into this pick either, so do we take some fattie that we don't remotely need right now? Do we "reach" for Milliner? Or do we take a chance on a QB? We won't be tied to Geno for 5+ years with a massive contract if he doesn't work out. He'll get a 3 year grace period and we will move on with the way the rookie contracts work now. |

Exactly! Geno has more chance to help us in a much larger way than anyone else out there. If Julius Peppers was out there you have a dilemma, but he ain't!

Why not just sit at 1.1 and take Geno? |

I'm talking about moving DOWN in the draft to get the guy you want and getting more picks as opposed to taking him were your pick is. In the best draft the 49ers ever had they traded out of the first out altogether. They still ended up with Tom Rathman, Charles Haley, John Taylor, and several others. Sometimes its trading UP like Walsh did to go get Jerry Rice. All I'm saying is DON'T REACH. Move back for more picks or move up for a guy you really want. Dallas did that to built their dynasty with Jimmy Johnson and the Pats did it more recently to not only get to the topbu STAY THERE. Again...not saying "don't take Geno". I'm saying he may not be the best pick at #1. Trading that pick is probably the best option. There is no magic bullet. One thing I know from watching Alex....putting HUGE pressure on a kid as the savior tends to make them crumble. |

Geno is the 1st player taken in the draft. Move down, lose Geno. Pretty simple.

Yes I have. Reminds me of a cross between Alex Smith and Vince Young. I mean that as a compliment BTW...has no bearing on their pro careers. I didn't think Alex or Vince were worthy of high picks either. |
