The Alex Smith to #Chiefs trade is now official. 49ers get 2nd round pick plus conditional 2014 pick. Chiefs get starting QB

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers will acquire an undisclosed 2013 draft choice, and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, in return for sending QB Alex Smith to the Chiefs. Smith must pass a physical in Kansas City for the trade to be executed.

“We would like to thank Alex for his contributions to the 49ers organization over the past eight years,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “He is a true professional who represented the 49ers with class on and off the field.”

Originally the first overall draft pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by San Francisco, Smith spent eight seasons in the red and gold. During his tenure with the 49ers, he started 75 of the 80 games in which he played, completing 1,290 of 2,177 pass attempts (59.3%) for 14,280 yards and 81 TDs.

In 2012, Smith was 6-2-1 as a starter, completing 153 of 218 pass attempts (70.2%) for 1,737 yards with 13 TDs and 5 INTs, and a QB rating of 104.1. In 2011, Smith led the 49ers to their first NFC West title and postseason berth since 2002. He threw for a career-high 3,144 yards on 273 of 445 pass attempts with 17 TDs, 5 INTs and a 90.7 QB rating.

Born in Seattle, WA, Smith attended Helix High School in LaMesa, CA. At the University of Utah, Smith boasted a 21-1 record as a starter and became the first player in school history to be named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

Is a 20-6 record the last 2 years relevant enough for you? You can only have it one way. There isnt a qb on earth who could have won the Niners games in 05 06 07. Name any one WR on the roster. Every Franchise goes through irrelevancy. I know you can attest to this, you guys have had some amazing seasons, but its a down time for you at the moment. He has all the tools and you will find out soon that his arm is more than adaquete. If you have any type of line, he will thrive.

Matt Cassel has had 2 decent seasons in his career as well.

Alex Smith isn't going 20-6 here unless our defense suddenly becomes elite.

You mean on a Patriots team right? Lets not start comparing that franchise to yours. I think he had a few more pieces around him then. You compare Alex career to Cassel but it doesnt even come close to the same path. Only stat wise do they look similar. Cassel was groomed and brought along, played when an injury happened. Alex was thrown into the fire just after he turned 20 on the worst team that has taken the field in 50 years. You know the rest of the story. Cassel has never dealt with what Smith has.
