This only makes sense. You have to be able to attack every dimension of the field on offense to really have a Superbowl caliber offense. Even Cam Newton can chuck the rock down field when called upon. Michael Vick had a pretty good deep ball as well, at least when he was younger. Smith is mobile like these two, although not in the same league in terms of mobility, but Alex Smith can't create the necessary down the field plays that defenses will eventually dare an offense to make. This point is proven.

Alex Smith has not proven he can throw the deep ball. I don't doubt he can throw it long, I'm assuming any NFL QB can chuck it deep, but AS doesn't have the chops to do in a game, during crunch time, like say the Manning bros. or any other high priced NFL QB. The Chiefs are paying a shit load of cash for a QB that cannot attack all dimensions of the field with reliability. And at AS's age, I don't think he is going to magically add the effective long ball to the arsenal.

his only deep threat ever for the 49ers was Vernon Davis. He had absolutely no problems with finding Vernon Davis, at any spot on the field, ever.

Please tell me who the other deep threats that he had. You talk about Michael Vick. Michael Vick, has Desean Jackson, and Jeremy Maclin. Cam Newton, has STEVE SMITH. Of what caliber receiver has Alex Smith ever had to throw the ball deep to? Alex Smith, can make every throw on the football field. He does not have the pure arm strength that Vick, Cam, or Kaep does, but that does not mean that if he had an Andre Johnson, or Calvin Johnson, or Desean Jackson type that he couldn't throw the ball deep. he would. He just hasn't had that. he does kind of have that now. I believe unless I am wrong, that Dwayne Bowe is the best receiver, Alex Smith will have ever played with......

He's not good at it. He's afraid of fitting balls into a tight window down the field.

The thing is, great QB's 'create' their deep threats, out of necessity if need be. Who the **** was Austin Collie before Manning made him a weapon, and pretty much every WR he has had outside of Wayne and Harrison has been mostly scrubby in terms of talent. If Peyton Manning went to the Niners I can guaran-damn-tee you that 'all of a sudden' WR's would start getting hit deep, it could be the most random ****ing flanker in the world, too he would get hit deep. Surprise? Don't think so.

Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers both have over 3.5x the amount of deep pass attempts and they are still superior, along with other QB's with a larger amount of attempts than AS for this statistical sample...

Well geez. Dallas Clark was a glorified Receiver. He never even lined up at the Tight end position for the Colts, he was their slot guy. And we went from talking about CAM AND VICK, TO MANNING? Im not even going to argue this. And actually, you did see that once Kaep took over, they did throw deep more, but that was usually more off of when Kaep would buy time, and that is something that Alex was terrible at......

Again. Look who you are comparing against. The best of the best. Also, Alex Smith does not and has not had a Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings, Randall Cobb, Donald Driver, James Jones, and Jermichael Finley.

He did not have an Eric Decker, or Demarius Thomas. At some point, that has to become relevant. Alex Smith is GONE from the 49ers, yet they still traded for Boldin, still drafted a TIGHT END, and a receiver. Kaeperick is 10 times more talented than Alex Smith. Now, put alex smith with Denver, or Green Bays receivers, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, he is not going to put up those numbers, that's not what im saying. But he might throw a few more chance balls, or deep balls.......hes not peyton, nor Rodgers, just illustrating the point of the difference in PLAY MAKERS.

And by the way, Aaron Rodgers has some of the worst RBs and O-line to support him. And Rodgers, Brees, Brady, and Peyton have all excelled with some shitty supporting casts due to injury. Rodgers played in a Super Bowl with his #3 guy as his #1. Brees once played with Terrence Copper as one of his #1 guys. Peyton played with Garcon as his #1 once. And Brady made the AFC Championship with Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney as his #1 guy.

This tracks with a lot of evaluations (professional and fan) I've seen from Alex Smith's past two years in San Francisco. Doesn't take changes. Passes up open throws if the window isn't completely busted open.

When your team has a guy who is 6'4", runs a sub 4.5 forty and has a 42" vertical, you would think that an offensive coordinator would figure out that this is a guy who should be running a bunch of Go, Post, and Slant routes that the QB can just chuck the ball deep and let him go get it.

Up until now, the Chiefs haven't had an offensive coordinator figure that out.

Baldwin will never get out of his breaks quickly. The laws of physics kind of dictate that.

You get him involved in a way that naturally fits him, and Smith should have no problem at all throwing deep--and subsequently opening up everything else underneath.
