I don't think he thinks my question I sent him was legitimate...

Or if it was, it hit too close to home and he's debating lawyering up and coming after for me for knowing stuff about him that I shouldn't.

If it's the former, it was a legit question I have and I figured Dane would be *the* guy to ask considering I have no other connections.

If it's the latter, I must implore him not to take legal action on me as I mean him no harm.

Apparently North Korea is having some problems with their internet today. Gee, I wonder how that happened.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/102289459#.

North Korea is having major Internet problems, just days after President Barack Obama promised a proportional response to the devastating hacks against Sony.

The country, which the FBI accused last week of the cyberattack, is suffering from periodic Internet outages, and experts at DYN Research found that recent problems were out of the ordinary, according to a report from North Korea Tech.

"I haven't seen such a steady beat of routing instability and outages in KP before," Doug Madory, director of Internet analysis at Dyn Research, told North Korea Tech. "Usually there are isolated blips, not continuous connectivity problems. I wouldn't be surprised if they are absorbing some sort of attack presently."

In an interview with Re/code, Madory said that even typically strong connections are experiencing disruptions. (CNBC's parent NBC Universal is an investor in Re/code's parent Revere Digital.)

"They're pretty stable networks normally," he told Re/code. "In the last 24 hours or so, the networks in North Korea are under some kind of duress, but I can't tell you exactly what's causing it."

He added that there is no way to know if the outages are the result of an attack, or are just from maintenance or a power outage. Still, "given the timing," a cyberattack is worth considering, he told Re/code.

I read that North Korea only has about 1,000 IP addresses. (The USA has billions). If the entire nation only has that many IP addresses, then apparently it is not very difficult to shut down their internet indefinitely with a DDoS attack.

If we have a cyberwar with some country, no one is better than us. We have the best coders and ready to go medieval on someone with off the grid slap downs.

The problem is that our electric grids, power plants, water treatment plants etc. are vulnerable as hell. They are easily cracked with password crackers and not updating their infrastructure on a regular basis. I bet 99% don't even fix zero day vulnerabilities.

Just thought of something, the hackers had said they had more sensitive Sony information that they would release if Sony made any more trouble. (Sony sort of acknowledged that more sensitive info was probably stolen)

Perhaps the USA decided to indefinitely kill NK's internet in part to stop the hackers? I imagine they'd still need China's help for a long-term solution, the hackers would just need to sneak a flash drive out or something.

Only if they are connected to the Internet. There are actually some very good security people on the SCADA side.

All of them have to connect to the internet at some point. May not be a direct connection but its still a connection.

Iran's nuclear plant had absolutely no connections to the internet and we still got Stuxnet in there.

No, they don't. EMS and SCADA do not require a connection to the Internet.

It wasn't their reactor. It was their centrifuges, specifically the PLCs which controlled them. But you are correct that it wasn't connected to the Internet. It was delivered by other means.
