Honestly, if you're going to pay top dollar for a free agent safety, you're better off going with Marcus Williams or Jessie Bates. Their best years are still ahead of them. Mathieu's play drastically fell off this year and there's really no way around it. He's not the player he was when he first signed here. You can't pay top dollar for "leadership," we've all seen how that works out in the past. I really do appreciate his contributions here but he was a hired gun who served his purpose.

Now if he goes out there and can't find a deal he's looking for and offers to come back for 11-12 million a year on a short term deal, then I'm all for it. I can't see it happening though as somebody always overpays for guys like him and we simply can't afford to do it.

If Veach can get a team to trade the Chiefs something for a couple of free agents like Sorenson and Niemann then no one can argue his status of the best GM.

I cannot think of a better year to replace Matheiu. There’s a lot of good players who can come in and instantly play his position well IMO.

Dax Hill, Jacques Brisker, Jalen Pitre, Nick Cross. Even Lewis Cine is an intriguing replacement for him.

I think this is the same situation as Frank Clark. The position is not in good shape. Thornhill is a decent starter but he’s it if you don’t bring back Matheiu. Wonder if Spags is pushing to get those 2 back for that very reason
