WR Emmanuel Sanders signs with Denver - Executives cry foul

Executives crying foul over Emmanuel Sanders deal

Emmanuel Sanders is expected to sign with the Broncos tomorrow, but the process that led him there left the other teams involved fuming and crying foul. One team official claimed Sanders' agent broke "every rule in negotiations."

Agent Steve Weinberg, on behalf of the receiver, accepted a deal with the Chiefs in principle, according to one team source. Weinberg then engaged in negotiations with the Tampa Bay Bucs, according to another source involved in the process.

While shopping the Chiefs offer to the Bucs, Weinberg never explained that he had already accepted the terms of Kansas City's offer. Later in the night, Sanders' agent had agreed to terms with the Broncos, which is where he is currently headed. Sanders and Weinberg also rankled the 49ers by agreeing to visit, then blowing it off.

"This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations," one executive involved said. "Totally wrong. This needs to be stopped."

Reached at his home late Saturday, Weinberg declined to comment on the record when informed of the allegations.

The Dallas-based agent was recently reinstated by the NFL Players Association, which had barred and decertified him in 2003 because it had reportedly found he diverted assets to an offshore account during a dispute with a partner and collecting a fee from a client prematurely. Weinberg later filed suit against the NFLPA and its top officials, alleging they illegally took away his certification for eight years, along with past, present and future income of clients.

Weinberg has two clients currently on NFL teams, not including Sanders. He had 42 before he was barred.

While Weinberg broke no laws in accepting a deal, the entire situation infuriated those he dealt with. It is commonly accepted in the league that once two sides agree to a deal -- in writing or in handshake form -- that's the end of the story. Instead, by Weinberg shopping the Chiefs deal and then not informing the Bucs that a deal had been reached showed another side of the business. It is unclear if the Broncos were aware of the previous actions.

"When a man gives you his words and pulls out," one executive said, "then gives another team your word and pulls out, then gives another team his word ... Not proper."

if I've ever wanted a Chiefs draft pick to exceed expectations and beat out a scabby veteran for a starting position it would be Nico Johnson making Joe Mays a training camp cut.

Nah, for the peanuts he's getting Mays is ok staying on as depth.

I don't like the guy, either...but maybe he will make Denver pay twice a year...I'm also a fan of Nico Johnson.

That should be an open competition

I'd give next years first and third for any teams first this year, too.
Nah, I really believe because this year's draft is sooooo deep in talent in all positions, I think we sit in the catbird seat to some degree and could actually acquire a few picks if we trade down a few spots that will really help us out this year and next and still get our guys this year. I wouldn't give up next year's 2nd and this year's 3rd NO WAY not with this talent level this year.

You don't understand.

Our second in next years draft will be lucky to be similar to our third this year...but once you get into the top 45 picks of this class, you are getting a guy that would be a first rounder in most any draft.

IMO trading next years second and this years third to get into the meat of the first rounders this year would be well worth it.

If we can do that along with moving down from 23 to the 29-40 range while adding another 2nd would be like getting 3 first round picks this year.

That's the kinda pimpin I'm hollering about to anyone that will listen.

We really need to sign this guy, but do we have the $$$? I suppose if we do Avery could be gone anyway. In fact, if Avery gets cut tomorrow, we know why. Then draft a safety, passrusher, or tight end.

Money. Cutting Avery could be the difference is getting him or not, and it's well documented that the front office likes Hemingway and Jenkins a lot.

I want Sanders AND a rookie WR like Beckham or Cooks. I'd say one of the stud TE's, but in any other draft those quality wideouts don't last that deep in the round, and the stud TE's usually do.
Make-shift TE's will work if your starters go down, see McGrath. Makeshift WR's are ****ing painful to watch, and that's where we'll be if bowe or sanders go down (assuming we cut Avery). Hemingway is decent, but he's not more than a 3, and would make a great 4.

I would keep Donnie but the money issue to me + their feelings on Jenkins and Hemingway = cut if we sign Sanders. He saves about 1 million to cut right now.
