Was Haley trying to throw games?

I'm no Pioli lover. This team still is pretty "no so good".

But come on man. That shit I saw last week was weird...

How long do ya'll think that was going on?

I think he was trying to be too creative and thinking way too much outside the box. Add to that his stubbornness. When a young coach does that then you have a formula for losing.

As a Haley fan going into this year, his stubbornness with players was baffling. No sane explanation for some of what he did. Palko, Gaither/Richardson, Battle/Jones...weird.

I can't imagine a coach intentionally "throwing" games, but he was so blind to the obvious in multiple areas that he might as well have.

I still think people are looking WAY too deeply into this. There are very conservative reasons for why Haley likely started Palko.

Palko over Orton. Orton shouldn't have played against Pittsburgh. He probably wasn't healthy enough to play against the Jets. And I think it's beyond ridiculous to suggest that Orton was only in to play on a gimmick play. It was pretty clear that Palko got hooked out of the Chicago game. So we're basically talking about outrage over Palko starting 1 and a half quarters of football (Chicago game) over Orton.

Palko over Stanzi... who knows. Maybe Stanzi is very unready. Maybe Haley was being ultra-conservative in rushing a young player. In his defense, we have no idea if Stanzi is really struggling in practice or not. I think people are getting a little bit carried away in their outrage that a 5th round rookie isn't starting.

So again... I would have gone with Stanzi. But the outrage over not starting a 5th round rookie has been way overblown.

I think Haley was so rigidly dogmatic that he'd stay with a battle plan undeterred unless absolutely necessary, even if the plan was so weird no other coach in their right mind would stick with it.

Example: this year's preseason.

Agreed on this one. Haley would be throwing his career away if there were any thought that he was throwing games. I think he was out of touch with the team, lost some key guys, and tried to be too unpredictable. Palko just seems to me like a guy who deserved a chance at the time. Football is obviously his life, and I think Haley wanted to recognize that.

He stayed with him for too long, had too many ridiculous losses and fell completely out of touch with the rest of the team because no one had any confidence in the unorthodox approach or in Palko's presence. I'm guessing Haley will go elsewhere and be a competent OC once again, or just a WR coach. That seems his forte, as he clearly improved Bowe's playing.

It's almost like he was TRYING to get fired.

I think he and Pioli simply didn't agree and Haley was determined to be "right" come Hell or high water.

He fought the law and the law won...

I think that after Orton was picked up and were paying him 2.5 million dollars for a few games, then you start him. Yea i can see why he didnt play his first week he arrived, but even thats debatable. The Raiders played palmer right after thier back up failed miserably, yea palmer ended up playing like shit too but ortons different. He actually played in the NFL this year unlike palmer who was off the couch. So the fact that haley started a no talent ass clown like palko over a veteran QB whom you picked off the waiver wire for the soul reason to replace casshole then you PLAY him. That in fact is reason beyond all belief that haley was a ****ing idiot and or he was trying to sabatoge the season and the team, doesnt matter it was clear on sunday that we are better off without him end of story

I can't imagine Haley was intentionally trying to throw games. Even if he knew he was going to get axed, he was still interviewing for his next coaching job. The more likely scenario is that he saw the direction things were heading and became increasingly desperate, scattered, and was grasping at straws.

I can believe that Haley thought Palko gave him the best chance to win against the Jets and started him. Still can't figure out why Haley didn't put Stazi in at half-time.
