Unfortunately, the damage won’t allow the engine to be stopped and feathered, so the engine continues to sputter, but with little power. El Duderino is not going to be able to keep up with the rest of the formation, and begins dropping back.

Despite blood staining the front of his flight suit, Garcia bronco lines up and does his job – 30% score

El Duderino is falling back fast, and Hawaiianboy is going to be under pressure with both waist guns out. Enddelt makes the decision to drop down to 10,000 feet and try to sneak out of occupied territory unobserved. El Duderino is limping along with the sputtering engine, which is actually worse than having the engine completely die, so its cruising speed is cut almost in half. It’s a sitting duck for fighters, so all the gunners get their adrenaline pumping. Even though they’re not familiar with the front guns, Scaga and Fat Elvis move up to the nose and take over the nose gun and cheek guns for the wounded bombardier and navigator. This frees a limping philfree up to be the full-time navigator on the lonely trip home, and Garcia bronco heads toward the back of the plane to tend his wound and be ready in case help is needed at the ball turret or tail gun.

The weather is poor at the base, and the radio is not working, so SNR hopes that the runway is clear. The ground crews are stunned to hear the sound of a B-17, one engine sputtering and fighting, nearly two hours after the formation was due to return. Cheers arise as a battered El Duderino cuts through the cloud bank, wings inadvertently waggling, circles once to line up with the runway, and then bounces to a rough landing. El Duderino travels to the end of the runway, cuts power, and then circles involuntarily off the tarmac as the #1 engine continues to push it forward. The plane slows further in the mud and a ground crew member runs underneath to chock the wheels. Mission accomplished.

Aftereffects

None – Despite injuries to four crew members, the plane and the crew are easily repairable.
