RICHMOND, Va. -- Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison Monday for his role in a dogfighting conspiracy.

Federal sentencing guidelines suggested a year to 18 months.

The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback also received three years' probation at his sentencing before U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson.

With nearly a month already served, going by Hudson's sentencing, Vick would be scheduled for release in October 2009.

In the Federal System you can sometimes reduce your sentence by up to a year if you participate in a drug rehab program (you have to be accepted into the program, and generally you have to show a history of drug use).
If you'll remember, Vick failed that drug test a few months ago. He may end up reducing his sentence by up to a year.

This is a really tough situation. Part of me believes that the punishment fits the crime which was, in itself, horrifying. Another part thinks this was a lynching. If he were not a public figure (read rich, black man), would this have been such a big deal? Anybody know how many white clod-hoppers are doing 2 years for dog fighting/murder?

If he hadn't lied about his involvement from the beginning, this might have turned out much differently, though. Bad deal all around.

Good question FAX, i just had a spirited debate with a black pal of mine about it tonight...he thinks its basically a lynching, my argument was that the Feds dont go after rinky-dink clod hoppers & inner city losers...they go after BIG MONEY guys, be they white or black, if Vick was some broke ass working at McD's...this wouldnt rate on a national scale.

To me, its the $$$...not the color that turned this into a Federal case.

I do think 23 months was a bit stiff though, like someone said earlier Leonard Little killed a PERSON while drunk driving & didnt serve a day in jail...as much as i am a dog lover, Mike didnt kill anyone.

I honestly think he could have learned his lesson without getting more than the prosecutions recommended sentence.
