First impressions of the top three quarterbacks

First impressions of the top three quarterbacks
Posted by Tom Kowalski | Opinion February 20, 2009 13:18PM

INDIANAPOLIS -- The first thing that struck me about the top three quarterbacks in this draft -- as they each talked to the media today at the NFL Scouting Combine -- was size. Matt Stafford and Mark Sanchez weren't small, but they weren't as big as I thought they might be (apparently, television does add 15 pounds).

Freeman, on the other hand, is huge. At 6-foot-6 and 248 pounds, he looked more like a pass-rushing defensive end. The kid is put together and looks solid.

Stafford really is an impressive guy, but I got the sense a lot of his answers were measured and he was making sure he said all the right things. He kept his answers short and to the point.

Sanchez was much more animated and seemed to enjoy himself the most. Part of that is probably playing under the Hollywood-type attention at USC. Sanchez, before he talked, even joined throng of media interviewing Stafford and gave him a hard time. Interestingly, that's when Stafford seemed to be the most relaxed.

Freeman, who knows he has a lot to prove at this combine, was more serious and made the point that he wants to "let people get an understanding of who Josh Freeman is.''

About the decision to throw at the combine Sunday, Stafford said it was his decision not to throw but he really never gave any good decision as to why. Sanchez, on the other hand, said "it would kill me not to throw.''

And Freeman said repeatedly, "I've got nothing to hide.''

In a couple of months, after the reams of research and miles of tape are analyzed about these three guys, the decision to throw or not to throw won't mean a great deal. But it means something now. Lions coach Jim Schwartz, who echoes the sentiment of a lot of NFL people, said he liked it when an athlete wanted to show the world what he could do.

So whats worse, him giving up 8 sacks, or Bowe having the second most dropped passes in the NFL?

I am flattered you remember every prospect I wanted to draft, but you both seriously need to step away from your computers and find what normal people call lives. douchebags

So, Staley gives up more sacks than every lineman in the NFL save five, and you think that a 1,000 yard receiver who was catching passes from Tyler Thigpen and Damon Huard is the problem?

Please, don't ever, ever breed.

Wasn't Leinart a real likeable guy, too?

Food for thought.

Lets remember Pat Kirwan worked for the Jets for a long period of time...the Jets are not a team that is remembered for knowing how to handle the draft.

And as someone that watched some of those mentioned QB's that makes me cringe.

I just posted the article to give another perspective. I certainly don't hail Kirwan as anything special.

The person throwing him the ball is the reason he is dropping them? Please. They're both professional athletes for a reason, you act like Thigpen is a mighty mites player who can't throw the ball.

So was I right about Bowe, or wrong about Staley? Take your pick.

Unlike traditional spread O's, OU has all 5 linemen with their hands in the dirt. The OL have normal splits, like a pro style offense, and they have many pro-set formations. Their formations are about 50/50, so, they are as much as a pro style offense, as a spread.

You were wrong about both. You are batting .000. Rafael Belliard is laughing at your lack of average.

The point with Bowe was that he got a grand in spite of awful QB play, pointing to how good of a player he is. He obviously needs to work on his hands.

But if you put up 32 GMS and told them to pick between Dwayne Bowe and Joe Staley, not only would everyone pick Bowe, no one would give you more than a 3rd or 4th for Staley. He ****ing sucks, end of story, I wanna nail him to the ****ing cross.
