I got an Upper Deck '89 complete factory set sealed for my 11th birthday. The one that includes Griffey's rookie. I believe it is card #1. Twenty years later, it's worth less than the day I got it.

****ing bullshit.

Mid 90's were high times for sports cards. It's been all down hill from there!

We bought a Jerry Rice rookie for $120 in the 90's. It's now worth a whopping $30!

My dad and I easily lost thousands but we enjoyed collecting together, which they say is priceless.

Most of my collection was from 1990-1997 or so.

I'd buy sets and pull the stars. Sell them at their peak value. Had about 20 A-Rod rookies about half graded at 9+. Sold them high. Bonds, Frank Thomas also. But I missed on Drew Bledsoe and many others.

I've got a shit ton of cards. It's a shame they're not worth much any more.

I also have a bunch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- those bad boys would be worth some serious coin still in the package.

I suppose I will hold onto them for when we have kids.

New cards must be in good shape.

That rice rookie in marginal condition is a couple bucks. Psa8? $50 or better. Psa9? 250ish. Psa10? It's a solid 4 digits.

Modern card prices vary based primarily on registry set collectors. Outside of that, they can be a tough sell.

I've never looked into grading my cards. I suppose that could make them worth more if in good shape.

Grading is generally tricky. Sometimes I don't understand the criteria. You can sub a card, get a shit grade, crack it out and resub it....good grade. Go figure.

But on the flip side, sometimes you hit gold and it'll pay off. Pop report is a huge factor as well. An example, fridge perry rookie card. Relatively easy to find in psa9 but the price will vary, starting at $40. I watched as a guy I know got the only psa10 to date for $600 on eBay. As soon as a couple more 10s pop, that price will fall.

At the time money was to be made, not having them graded was better. Then you could haggle over shit and make money.

My Grandfather has made tons of money doing coin sales. You get say a 1909-s VDB wheatie, you almost have to send it off.

Different thing

I worked for a memorabilia distributor during this time......and it was pretty amazing to watch prices go through the roof.

This was the time where Randy Moss rookie cards and worn-jersey cards were hot.

But what was hilarious was when Pokemon hit the US market. sports card stores were ordering more (and charging more) for Pokemon cards than any sport.

Boxes were going for over 100 bucks, ebay was booming with rare cards. I've never seen anything like it.

Everyone wanted to sell those cards, and you would have the most unbelievable businesses - that had absolutely zero to do with sports or trading card memorabilia - want to sell them.

eBay last week. I was involved in the bidding for a Minute, but dropped out. So I got notices on the bidding, and both sold for about $126.00
