I was thinking about this today.

I had a Coke, and as you know, the bottle is sealed. I finished my liquid poison and started to throw it away. As a neat person, I put the lid back on, and then gasped with alarm as I understood the implications.

I present to you the following facts:

1. Plastic soda and water bottles degrade very slowly over thousands of years.
2. The lids on these bottles seal tightly.
3. If you put the lid on before throwing it away, you essentially seal air into the bottle.
4. The earth is a closed system.

If you put all of these pieces together, the truth becomes evident. If you put the lid on your soda bottle before throwing it away, you seal away some air into a container that won't degrade for thousands of years. In essence, you're removing air from the environment.

If we keep doing this, we will all eventually die of suffocation as all of the atmosphere ends up in landfills inside sealed soda bottles and water bottles. It's just a matter of time.

So when you throw your bottle away, don't put the lid on it or we'll all die. Or I guess you could recycle it.

creating a wasteland Mad Max would live in fear of

You are looking at this wrong. You are sealing in the air for future use. When we run out we just need to dig up bottles. It is like conservation.

You could capture a fart in that said coke bottle and seal it for 20-200-2,000 years for someone to open up and take a whiff.

if we don't reseal them the future is safe from us,
at least in that aspect

As long as it doesn't involve removing oxygen from the atmosphere.

Send them to the 3rd world. Hell we send our jobs there, why not our trash? Kill them off first, the jobs come back, and with the 3rd world vacated we essentially have a huge landfill.

I do my part by squeezing all of the air out of the bottle before capping it. I always do that so it takes up less space in the garbage can, but now I see I have been unwittingly saving the world.
