Nutrition, supplements, weight and speed training has changed not only football but basketball as well. These guys are so big and so strong and so fast that the collisions are easily 10x as powerful as those guys that played in the 40's and 50's (let alone, the 20's and 30's). Just 30 years ago, while in high school, the biggest guy and fastest guy, who went on to have a stellar career in NCAA Division I football, was 6'0, 210 pounds and played defensive line. He wouldn't be big enough to play Safety in today's NFL. |

Listen to former players that are now "experts" and it's obvious.

I think if you're able to look at the situation objectively it's been pretty clear for a while that football's days are numbered. Once they can reliably test for CTE in living people it will start a spiral at the end of which football will either not exist or be a fundamentally different game. I'm not saying it'll happen tomorrow or next year, but if it doesn't happen within 20 years I'll be surprised.

Or maybe, if we are lucky, we will return to an age of personal responsibility. That would be neat. |

I hope that people understand that the juice is worth the squeeze. At the same time they can always work the technology etc to make the game safer, etc. Knowing everything I know about CTE, I would still go back and play football in middle school and high school just like I did, and if we are daydreaming, I would have played in college and beyond. I hope that there are still plenty of people out there like that. |

Our society lost it's personal responsibility a good 40 years ago. Do you think it'll really make a comeback in the NFL?

I'm not talking about football being outlawed by any kind of external authority. If they can detect CTE in high school, college, and mid-career NFL players it would destroy the talent base, even if the test is optional and they let players continue to play in spite of being diagnosed.

I'd destroy my brain too to become an NFL caliber athlete. (So would most people, I'm guessing).

For most of these guys, playing in the NBA is the penultimate. Once more people deny their children the opportunity to play football, the sport will die. It’s already happening. |
