I'd give Melvin Ingram one more year if he's still got some gas in the tank. Dude is money against the AFC West.

I'm curious how productive Ingram really was for us? Any stats out there that suggest he was a significant shot in the arm for our D-line?

Examining Chiefs' remaining needs following 2022 NFL draft
by
Nicolas Roesch
May 9, 2022

The 2022 NFL draft is in the books, rookie minicamp is underway and the Kansas City Chiefs’ 90-man offseason roster is beginning to take shape.

The Chiefs have filled a lot of needs throughout their roster via the draft and in undrafted free agency. They still, however, could use some quality depth at a variety of positions. It’s possible, especially on the defensive side of the ball, that they could still add a starter or two in the coming weeks or months ahead of OTAs, mandatory minicamp and training camp.

Let’s take a look at the remaining needs for Kansas City as we enter phase 2 of the offseason program:

Defensive end

Despite selecting George Karlaftis in the first round, the Chiefs’ defensive end group as a whole isn’t too inspiring. There is plenty of reason to be excited for Karlaftis, but remember that he is a rookie and could face a learning curve in the NFL.

Frank Clark is coming off his worst sack total since his rookie season, recording only 4.5 during the 2021 NFL season. He still sets the edge and plays the run well, but he doesn’t seem to have the same motor or athleticism from his previous years. He’s also struggled to stay healthy, missing multiple games in two of his three seasons with the Chiefs. They can’t put very many chips in Clark bouncing back to 2019 form.

Mike Danna has proven valuable as a rotational pass rusher, but he will have to elevate his game to get more snaps than Karlaftis or Clark. Joshua Kaindoh has a massive frame and a lot of athletic traits but spent most of 2021 on injured reserve and still has plenty to prove. The same goes for 2021 UDFA Malik Herring, who spent last year redshirting a knee injury with Kansas City.

With all the unknowns within the edge rush group, the Chiefs would really benefit from bringing in a veteran free agent. Melvin Ingram will come to mind first for Chiefs fans, and it is a definite possibility after the Chiefs placed a UFA tender on him. It would be nice to see the team make another addition, but edge rushers don’t come cheap.

Defensive tackle

On the surface, the Chiefs have a nice duo of starting defensive tackles in Chris Jones and Derick Nnadi. Jones is a perennial Pro Bowler and Nnadi’s stout run defense is a nice complement to Jones’ pass rushing abilities.

Their depth isn’t bad either. Tershawn Wharton has been a diamond in the rough since signing with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent in 2020. Khalen Saunders has shown flashes when healthy, which has been the big problem to this point of his career. Taylor Stallworth is a good free-agent addition who could see more success with extended playtime.

So, what’s the cause for concern? Chris Jones is the only defensive tackle under contract for the Chiefs in 2023. Kansas City could save roughly $20 million by cutting him after the 2022 season, which could be a possibility considering Jones hasn’t reached double-digit sacks since 2018.

There’s also a concern for injury. If Jones were to miss extended time, the Chiefs don’t exactly have another DT with very polished pass-rushing ability. It could be worth considering bringing in a free agent who can get after the quarterback. Larry Ogunjobi is an intriguing free agent option who is coming off his best season as a pro with seven sacks for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Cornerback

The Chiefs have a lot of talented cornerbacks, but do they have a true No. 1 lockdown corner? They certainly hope that Trent McDuffie will become that guy, but he may need a year or two before he gets there. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo likes to line up L’Jarius Sneed all over the defense, from a nickel to outside corner.

Kansas City has nice depth behind McDuffie and Sneed, but nobody to surely bank on. The AFC West is loaded with premier wide receivers, so continuing to invest in corner wouldn’t be a bad thing. There are still a number of quality veterans available such as Chris Harris Jr., Kyle Fuller and Kevin King. New York Giants CB James Bradberry, who the Chiefs have shown interest in, is expected to be released soon and would be a great fit in Kansas City too. Having a veteran in the building might not be such a bad thing given the current influx of youth they have at the position.

QB - A+
OL - A
RB - C+
WR - B-
TE - A+

DL - C (Clowney & Ogunjobi = B)
LB - B+
CB - C+ (Bradberry = B)
S - C+

Not sure if I'm being too harsh on our secondary, could end up as good as our OL overhaul but we're currently without a star player and relying on a couple of rookies to step up. Who's the leader of our secondary now without Honey Badger?

I think the secondary positions are a bit better than you’re giving them credit for (though some of the improvement is obviously from unproven rookies, McDuffie seems like as sure of a hit you can have at rookie CB). Leaders of the defense will almost assuredly be Justin Reid and Nick Bolton.

Really hard to grade these positions without knowing what the rookies will do.

OL could be an A+ if Kinnard is good. Most evaluators graded us as a top 5 OL last year, despite having a gaping hole at RT.

Who really knows with WR? I do like that we appear to have a minimum of 4 competent bodies.

I’m confident the secondary as a whole will be a minimum of a B, with major upside. Bradberry would make the group a minimum B+. But still, that’s with the assumption that McDuffie is good. I think he will be, because Veach has routinely found good DBs with much less investment than moving up in the first.

I agree this is my right now grade but bring in a couple of FAs and give us a season to gel and every one of our position groups could be a B or better by the playoffs.

If Kinnard is the guy at RT, then for sure our OL is an A+.

If our OL is an A+, that could finally elevate our RD 1 RB and get our RB group to a B but hard to live up to RB expectations in KC due to the big names in our past.

LB could also be an A by the end of the season.

Our WR group is made up of good #2/#3 types, a solid foundation for the future.

The DB group requires a lot of faith in our youth movement. Add Bradberry and they could be an A group by the end of the year but currently, it's all projection.

I agree about the WRs. Much deeper but not top heavy like before.

If Veach pulls a rabbit out of his hat and makes a splash for like McLaurin, then that becomes an incredible group.

Suh accumulated 12 sacks, 32 quarterback hits and 16 tackles for loss over the past two seasons in Tampa Bay. The only defensive tackles with more sacks during that stretch are Aaron Donald, Chris Jones, DeForest Buckner and Cam Heyward. For quarterback hits during that period, only Grady Jarrett and Jonathan Allen notched more than Suh.

The moral of the story? Suh can still play.

Defensive tackle is also one of the only positions at which the Chiefs could clearly use an upgrade. It’s also a one without a recent high draft pick that Suh would be preventing from seeing playing time.

When they signed Reed last year, the Chiefs clearly saw value in adding a veteran interior rusher. Suh’s role would be similar: joining Jones on the interior to wreak havoc on passing downs." -bleacher report
