The guy was smart as hell. I enjoyed that interview.

If anyone still cares, Jack Harry said NBC41 contacted ESPN personally... and ESPN said there was no truth to the rumor. So he will probably be hired tommorrow. LOL

Well, the A's are used to fleecing Royals' GMs, and now Billy Beane's favorite GM (to fleece) will control the Royals. Steve Phillips is the anti-Moneyball GM.

The only silver lining is that if Dan Glass no longer has any control, maybe the GM after Phillips might have a chance.

Phillips is a joke.

A lot of people are speculating that the reason the "changes" are taking so long is that Glass wants to have a smooth transition and have the next GM ready when he fires Baird.

That might be my favorite part of the book, where he talks to other GM's. I'd recommend reading the book just for that alone, it's entertaining how he interacts with other GM's and his own baseball people. Beane is such a used car salesman. I can't believe other GM's deal with him. "Hey buddy! I got this guy I'll trade you! Yeah! He's f'ing great! And see! All I want in return is this one guy... yeah, him, he's just a fatass 3rd baseman! Nobody YOU really want! But I'll take him on, no big deal!"

Yeah, that's fine. You still can't "announce" a new GM before firing the old one.

Well, it's also possible Baird could be "re-assigned".

Although personally, for the man's own sake, I'd rather just see him take some time off. He's spent darn near half his life working his rear end off for this organization. His wife is probably the most patient human being on earth.

I think many would be okay with that; his service and loyalty are laudable, but he's clearly in over his head....and it's been pretty clear for awhile now.

I personally don't think he's in over his head as much as people would like to believe. He's probably too loyal. Not that he's a great GM, he's not perfect, but I think we could do a LOT worse. We could probably do better too. And even if he gets fired tomorrow there will still be a lot of the pieces that could develop into a good team. It's still too early to tell. That'll be his legacy to me, whether Gordon/Butler/Huber/Greinke/Bautista/Burgos/etc/etc/etc all succeed or fail.

I agree the farm system can tell the tale of a good GM; but his FA blunders, and refusal to put pressure on the Glass family.....are indicative of a lack of cajones....IMHO.
