Saying that Lamar still has more areas to improve than Mahomes is like saying that me as a teacher will get a bigger raise than my architect friend once I get my masters. The problem is, my architect friend will still be pulling in 19K more than I am and will be easily out-earning me my whole life. It’s too cavernous of a gap.
The gap between Mahomes and Lamar as pure passers is even more pronounced - and even if Lamar jumped beyond Alex Smith’s ability as a passer, he still is not close to reaching the upside Mahomes has already reached - and who knows how much Pat could still improve on his game from here. My curiosity? What happens when Lamar gets a nagging lower body injury like Pat had this year? It was a pretty stellar achievement for Pat to lead the Chiefs to a 12-4 record in spite of a spending a half season fighting off a nagging injury that severely limited his ability to improvise outside the pocket. Lamar getting an injury like that would be even more limiting to his game - and allow teams to force him to throw outside the hashes like the Titans did. That to me will be the big question concerning Lamar, when the run game is completely removed from the equation - can Lamar win from behind with his arm alone? I never felt Alex Smith could reliably do that, and I think the jury is still out on whether Lamar can either. Last edited by Chiefspants; 07-15-2020 at 04:34 PM.. |

I wonder when our society will shift, and we'll start ignoring idiots instead of giving them the mic and a spotlight.

Really? Are you sure you want to go with “any”? Because Eric Mangini says hello. And as I recall during the Super Bowl Gronk said that Jimmy G was as good as Patrick Mahomes in an interview.

Not only is lamar limited here. He doesn't have a fraction of the leadership of mahomes. While mahomes was bouncing around the benches pumping up his teammates lamar was sulking on the bench. |

Athletically, Pat's strength is his arm; Jackson's strength is his legs (though his arm has gotten better.) Over time, Jackson's speed is more likely to decline than Pat's throwing. Advantage Pat. Next, there should be something said about instincts and football IQ that advocates of Jackson seem to want to overlook.
Instincts and football IQ show up in the form of clutch performance and leadership. Again, advantage Pat. Pat's instincts and football IQ appear to be superior, based on what we've seen thus far. Listen to interviews of both and I think it's clear Pat has better intuition and understanding of the game. It's like a LeBron vs. Hardin argument, or LeBron vs. KD--where Pat is LeBron. That's not to say Lamar is not instinctive, or does not understand the game--I simply think Pat has a clear edge there. For the record, if they both stay healthy both are likely to have ridiculous careers and both should be headed to the Hall of Fame. However, if I had to pick one or the other to start a team, Pat's an easy choice. Lamar (or DeShaun) would likely be next on my list though. This argument is that close.

The Lamar fans really like to gloss over playoff performance. That’s hilarious. Regular season is pretty much irrelevant.

It's not even like he was mediocre. Two of his worst games as an NFL player have been in the playoffs. Mahomes on the other hand has one of his worst games and still pulls out the win in the Super Bowl. Until Lamar can actually perform when it matters most this discussion is a nonstarter.

And he was the primary reason they lost. Mahomes’ 1 playoff loss featured a 30+ point second half against the GOAT defensive coach who later shutdown a strong Rams offense to 3 points total in Super Bowl. Mahomes got the job done in the clutch and had the lead very late. Dee Ford gave it away.

We've seen Mahomes in this exact situation against the 49ers. While Mahomes is rousing his players on the sideline deep in the 4th quarter down by 10 - Lamar was unraveling against the Titans. Their 8 point deficit against the Titans felt like a 20 point deficit (and then before we knew it, it was a 20 point deficit). I felt like we saw that play out so many times with past Chiefs QB's. The thing about Lamar is that he does play with a chip on his shoulder. He came into 2019 hellbent to prove himself as a passer (and playing against Mahomes was a big deal for him) and he did exceed everyone's expectations in 2019. I'm certain he's going to do everything he can to maximize his arm ability and his leadership role on the sideline. What I will say for Lamar is that he does have generational vision and ability as a runner downfield and because his skill-set is so radically different than Pat's generational ability as a passer, if he can stay healthy, match-ups between he and Pat would be marquee match-ups (like Federer-Nadal, Bird-Magic, etc) for the broader sports world for a decade if Lamar can stay healthy. We saw Alex Smith lead the Chiefs to 5 straight winning seasons, Lamar has every bit that ability. The question becomes if the Ravens can steamroll their way to the Super Bowl (preventing Lamar from playing behind) or if Lamar can develop enough as a passer/leader to not unravel and lead a come back in that scenario. |

I guess Ninkobitch is valuing a Regular season MVP more than an SB MVP.
Then compares Jackson's full-season stats against Mahomes injury limited stats. He is also ignoring Jackson's horrible playoff game where he pouted on the bench and says it was on the "team" and then decided not to talk about Mahomes epic comeback wins. His rose-colored glasses are thick. |

He really can't get much closer to 'circus work' than being a sports analyst that struggles with grammar and spell checking.
