Syphilis Soars in the US

Syphilis cases in the US have risen to the highest level since the 1950s, according to new data on sexually transmitted infections released yesterday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.


The US saw 203,500 syphilis cases in 2022 (the last year for which data are available), up 17% from 2021 and nearly 80% from 2018. The data also showed 3,755 babies were born with congenital syphilis in 2022, a nearly 31% change year-over-year and a 183% change since 2018.

Meanwhile, new cases of gonorrhea in 2022 declined for the first time in a decade, down 8.7% from 2021. Health experts are not sure of the reason behind the decline. Cases of chlamydia, which accounted for roughly two-thirds of the more than 2.5 million total cases of sexually transmitted infections in 2022, were up 0.3% year-over-year but down 6.2% since 2018.

A decade a go, experts say infections - which spread via contact with a syphilitic sore, which usually forms on the genitals - were almost all among gay or bisexual men.

But there was a sudden 'shift' in 2013, when cases began to rise among women and straight men.

Experts say much of this can be explained by the increasingly popularity of dating apps among heterosexual people, like Tinder, which launched in 2012.

Grindr - a dating app used by gay men - launched in 2009, when syphilis cases among men who have sex with men began to gradually rise.

Experts suggest the apps expanded access to sexual partners, as Americans no longer had to rely on meeting potential suitors in person.

Dr Joseph Cherabie, a sexual health expert in St Louis, Missouri, told DailyMail.com: 'The way we date, meet people, hook up, has been made a lot more easy with the advent of dating apps — so that plays a role.

'All of a sudden, you have a bunch of potential mates at your fingertips, and so I think that could definitely play a role.'

With the trend of young ladies wanting to increase the "body count" as some sort of trophy, just remember that if you are part of that "body count" then you just got what the last ten guys have. Yuck. Glad I'm married.
