I am pretty sure from the stories that I've read that the Chiefs talked with his agent.

So if Mathieu's agent says we want top 5 safety money -

Jamal Adams $17,500,000 average
Harrison Smith $16,000,000 average
Justin Simmons $15,250,000 average
Budda Baker $14,750,000 average
Eddie Jackson $14,600,000 average

Chiefs really did not have a contract to offer him that would be satisfactory.

Exactly. The Chiefs played it perfectly. Reid is a headhunter and costs less and is younger. There’s still some damn good players this FA period, too. We’re still going to add some solid additions and I still think we’ll pull off superstar trade. The Chiefs aren’t done, we have a lot of our own FAs who won’t be retained and will need to be replaced.

And three of those 5 deals are deals the team would probably like to have back. Another one is something of a legacy contract. About the only contract on that list that presents a true asset is Simmons.

And if Mathieu ends up on that list he’ll end up in ‘regret’ territory as well.

But there’s a non-zero chance that he’s overplayed his hand here and ends up closer to $12-13 million a year when the big money stops flying at the beginning.
