Law & Surtain: The Best CB Tandem in the League?

(Since it's all but "official". http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/15106482.htm )

Law & Surtain: The Best CB Tandem in the League?

That would have definitely been true 2-3 years ago.

Is it still true?

I don't know. If they are both healthy, and have "gas left in the tank" then I think they could be...

Even if they are healthy, and ready to play though, I'm not sure they will live up to their billing, UNLESS Sims and the DTs pick it up with more pressure from the inside. AND they get help from our safeties.

Otherwise they could become the two most overpaid "older" CBs in the league.

Here's hoping that Sims and Wesley (along with Edwards, Junior, and Pollard--not to mention Hali) can make a difference.

I'd say the best CB tandem in football is probably true. But I think the number one tandem will be shared with a few teams.

Re: Ty Law IS a Chief

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am a long time NY Jets fan -- And I just wanted to weigh in on the KC Ty Law situation. Ty Law is an upgrade for KC at CB -- but I don't know how much he will actually improve their Defense. He had ten picks last year -- but that was because he blew would blow off his assignment and act as a ball hawk. He made our defense look worse than it was because of his selfish play. IMO he was the downfall of our young safety Eric Coleman. Law is old, slow and he gets flagged just about every game for the "Ty Law rule." The old man can't bump WR's ten yards down the field anymore.

All of these Chief fans sound like I did last year -- excited about our chances. 12 losses later, I realized that Ty Law wasn't the answer or the problem. The problem was HERM EDWARDS. The lack of clock management, the cutting of practices and conditioning lead to terrible performances and injured players. The man is a hell of a motivator, but he doesn't know X's and O's to save his life.

If I were a Chiefs fan, I would be happy about the Law singing but ****ED about that idiot HERM running my team. If I were a chargers fan -- I wouldn't be too worried about KC. They are the third best team in that division. And as a Jets Fan, I am extatic that we got a 4th round pick for EDWARDS. Hell, I would have taken a 12 pack and a bag of chips.

Chiefs Agree to Terms with Second-Round Pick S Bernard Pollard
Jul 21, 2006, 4:30:34 PM

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Friday that the club has agreed to terms of a four-year contract with S Bernard Pollard. Pollard is the fourth member of the Chiefs 2006 draft class to agree to terms with the club. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available.

“We are pleased to have our second-round draft choice Bernard Pollard under contract prior to the start of training camp,” Peterson commented. “We believe that Bernard is a tremendous talent who has the potential to eventually become a starter for our team in the future. We believe he will make a solid contribution to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2006 and for many years to come.”

“We felt after watching Bernard Pollard in college that he was going to be a physical player in the back end of our defense and I think we found out a little bit more about that this spring,” Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards commented. “He has great range and he is eager to learn. He’s a team-oriented guy. Bernard is a guy who has speed, a great ability to tackle and will help us on special teams. When you look at our secondary I think everyone was concerned about the corner position, but when I looked at it we only had three safeties who had played a significant amount of time. I think the addition of Bernard Pollard is going to help us tremendously.”

Pollard (6-1, 224) joined the Chiefs as the club’s second-round pick (54th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft. Pollard entered the draft with one year of eligibility remaining at Purdue. He played in 36 games (35 starts), recording 254 tackles (164 solo), 8.0 tackles for loss (-26.0 yards), a sack (-3.0 yards), four interceptions for 19 yards, nine passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. Pollard also set a Boilermakers record with five blocked kicks, in addition to returning three blocked punts.

Pollard opened all 11 games at strong safety in 2005, producing 92 tackles (64 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss (-7.0 yards), three INTs, three passes defensed and a fumble recovery. He was named second-team All-Big Ten by The NFL Draft Report.

The Fort Wayne, Indiana native was selected first-team All-Indiana as a senior at South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Pollard also competed in basketball and track in high school.

I know the feeling....I had been "off" since Friday, pretty much, until around the time the deal broke...

Considering that Law has already played in Herm's D his signing should make everyone else in the secondary better.

Not only a smoother transition but also the experience and leadership can be passed on.

I don't know how much better our safeties will be this year but they'll be better than they would have been without him.

My only concern is Wesley deep...

All the Chiefs have to do now is make it to the playoffs AND survive the first round,

Simple enough...right?
