Detroit took 2 or 3 WRs with their first pick in 2-3 consecutive years, it was when Millen was the GM. The only WR that panned out was Calvin Johnson. The other one was Williams and then wasn't there another WR or was it just those 2?

There was indeed another WR selected.

I actually REALLY liked Charles Rogers. Drugs, and injuries ruined his career. He had real potential though.

Yah, Rogers was supposed to be great. Mike Williams was kind of a sketchy pick as he only had like one good year, but he was big. At least Megatron panned out for them...

I don't remember Mike Williams. I remember Roy Williams. Fast, but he was always getting hurt.

A player can be a "bust" w/o being a first round pick. NFL history is full of examples. Unitas was a great player, but he wasn't considered to be much early in his NFL career. There are many guys who started slow or who were in the wrong system.

Calvin Pace was a disappointment when he was in Arizona and played well with the Jets.

I wonder if Kerry Collins qualifies?
He was really good for Carolina and then flamed out with the infamous clip of him smoking a stogie as he left the cop shop. After that he went to a SB and took the Titans to a 13-3 record...

Collins & Dilfer. The 2 worst NFL QBs to get super bowl rings.

IIRC, Brad Johnson had a career year in 2002 when TB won the super bowl, and was actually a very good QB. He was sort of the anti-Alex. Lousy efficiency but decent production.
I am under the impression that Doug Williams and Rob Johnson were a step up from Dilfer & Colllins, but I could well be wrong. |

Doug Williams was a very good quarterback on a some very bad Tampa Bay teams, although he did take his team to their first NFC Championship. He was very good in the USFL and won a Super Bowl in Washington. |

It seems the key to being a high round draft pick bust is being picked by a team that is locked into at least a decade of terrible play.
Several TB guys, Arizona. It is a bit shocking Detroits post-Barry run didn't produce anyone other than Mike Williams and that's stretching it. |
