I was in the Air Force on flight status. I knew many who died in plane crashes/accidents. My roommate in flight training was killed in an F15E accident. He left behind a wife and kids. Buried in Arlington.
ETA - He was from Lee's Summit (I believe.) He was a Chiefs fan too. https://cdm16412.contentdm.oclc.org/...2coll4/id/157/ https://www.flyingmag.com/pilots-pla...cting-800-mph/ The first link is a picture of Dennis and a short description of his position/unit etc. The second link has a video where the pilot describes what occurred in the crash that killed Dennis. My grandfather killed 37 German pilots in WW2. Worst mechanic the Luftwaffe ever had.

I had a great uncle who served in the Army in WWII. He was always a lot of fun, but was never w/o his beer. My grandmother used to worry a lot about him and would take him food, but he usually preferred his beer over food.
A couple of years ago, my mom and dad shared a letter that he had written to my grandmother. He talked a lot about what life was like on the front lines of the war, describing seeing his friends dying and himself killing the enemy. At that moment I understood why he had become an alcoholic. He went through hell and survived while many of his friends did not. RIP to my Uncle J.J. and thank you and millions of others for your selfless service to our country.

Three friends with whom I served died in Afghanistan or Iraq - Jaimie Leonard, Bill Wood and Hans Kurth. It’s been many years since their deaths, but they still resonate. May they rest in peace.

Sorry for the loss of your friends. Care to share something about them that made them who they were?

I don't have anyone close that died in service. But have had several that served.
Big tip of the cap to all that have served, and certainly condolences for the killed and wounded. |

These guys. Picture attachments suck for some reason.
The youngest was 19 killed in action only six days into his first combat deployment, the last one was on his fourth at 29 years old. A few years ago I wrote about my friend Sean Sims here on CP. This is the only day of the year I wear a memorial bracelet, and today I’m wearing SFC Danny Metcalfe’s. Have fun today, guys. Seriously— do something you enjoy, and maybe call or text a friend you haven’t reached out to in awhile. Life is for living! |

He was killed by a suicide vehicle bomb. Right after his birthday. 12 years ago. He would be 49 today. In our time we’d play basketball, watch college football, he was a Razorback’s fan, and the start of south park. He was funny, and made people happy around him. His son Andrew is playing football in college north of St. Louis. Winning some OL awards too as I hear. I had planned to watch him play last year. But will keep an eye on him for the chiefs interests of course. Then there’s Harry, Gabe, Evan, Thomas, and 4 Iraqi police officers we were training. All deserving of attention, reflection and memorialized more than I can do right now. Last edited by crazycoffey; 05-31-2021 at 02:34 PM.. |

Thanks for sharing. These heroes are not numbers. They were people with family, friends and lives planned. Brings home their sacrifice for the country.
