I don't know much about Kishi Bashi, but they sure remind me a lot of what Animal Collective used to sound like. A ton of energy, not a lot of simple song structure. Just lots of elements thrown into a bowl, and hit "frappe." My recommendation is "Bright Whites."

Also, I am still of the belief that there is no more exciting musical artist right now than Kanye West.

He released an outstanding album this year, but it's caused me to go back and listen to his earlier stuff, like Late Registration, and I've found myself falling in love with extremely thoughtful, reflective tracks that almost seem to completely collide with the image Kanye's crafted for himself.

Fyfe's "St. Tropez" is a short and sweet adventure. It's like two songs spliced into each other. It's a see-saw between gentle indie soul and orchestral bombast.

A friend of mine just peaked my interest in Madon's "Beggin'," which is just a really fun trip down soulful dance music. We need much, much more like this song.

I used to like them a ton. Like, a ton a ton. The Richest Man In Babylon is still a damn good listen whenever I break it out.

I loved how they were able to so seemlessly work in any culture of music from the globe into their work. Nowadays, I tend to prefer different country's musical cultures on their own terms. I really like Oliver Mtukudzi, for starters.

Daft Punk, of course, came out with perhaps the album of the year. They resurrected neo-disco and ****ing perfected it.

An outstanding disco rock song came out last year, however, from Penguin Prison: "Don't **** With My Money." Extremely catching song, the kind you whistle long after you heard it earlier in the day.

I think the best new-ish genre of the past several years is NOT chill wave, it's indie R&P. How To Dress Well and Active Child are two of the best of the best right now. I'm happy to dispense recommendations should anybody be aching for any.

But right now I've really loved this song by some group called Metronomy, called "The Look" remixed. Perfect example of what this genre does so perfectly.

Here's something for SR: some good groove electro with that foggy, delicious haze I love so much and never seems to quite be as upbeat as you like it to be:

Schlohmo's "Later." This song takes precisely 1:25 to warm up. And then it hits its stride.

I don't hate it either - I'm just not into that genre as much - to me that's pretty much dub-step still - or borderline. I like that you like it though.

my download of 2013 was Throwing Stones by Solid Groove.

it MUST be played on a decent stereo to do it's bassline justice, and it too takes a bit to break off that original repetitive riff, but it's well worth the wait.
