I'm with you there. But what about this scenario. Alex Smith plays very well and does everything possible to help the team win (ala Charger game) and the defense doesn't play well and we lose to one of those teams. What then?

Once the offensive line play improved to mediocre, from the Cleveland game or so, he's been good.

There's no point in deciding if he deserves an extension this offseason until the offseason, though.

The guy is going to be responsible for almost 4K yards of total offense this year. He's unquestionably been in the top 1/2 of NFL quarterbacks this year and he's getting better. His last 4 weeks have been his best weeks thus far.

And folks are really sitting around saying - eh **** it, who needs him?

How the hell did you people forget just how awful so many QBs in this league are. FFS, Matt Cassel is actually getting starts still.

Hell yes he's earned an extension. Should it be some moronic Flacco/Romo style extension? Hell no, but if you can get him to sign an extension for 9-12 million/season, why the hell wouldn't you?

Be reasonable. The guy's been a good quarterback for us and without a proven superior option we'd be silly to let him walk.

That could work. I think he's making around 8.5 now? That sounds doable..

Contracts in the $20M range cause teams to dump talent and saddle the team unless the QB is truly elite.

A contract at $9-12 M/year probably only allows us to keep the status quo. And I'd rather take my chances elsewhere than settle for a few years of feel good football without a real chance for a Superbowl.

I'd feel better at $8 M per year, which is where he's at now. No one thinks we are going to win the SB this year, so that means we still need to add talent to this team if we are building toward a championship. Alex only makes sense if he is cheap enough that we can keep elite talent on both sides of the ball around him.

If the cap increases as expected, Smith at 9-12 million/yr is cheap enough to keep elite talent on both sides of the ball around him.

That's really my point - nobody thinks Smith is an elite guy; a guy that makes all his teammates better. But I think we've established that he can win and win big with a good team. If he's making 'game manager' money, then it makes sense to keep him because we can surround him with that good team.

And for the record, but/for the fact that Peyton Manning is a !@#$ing quarterbacking robot, I would absolutely believe that this team can win a Super Bowl, or at least get to one.

So let's say we extend Smith for 4 years/$40 million - in 2 years, Manning's gone and this team has a clear path to the AFCW.

"take my chances elsewhere...."

With what? Who? You want to let the guy leave after 2014 and spin the wheel on Bray?

I think Chiefs fans suddenly got really spoiled by a competent quarterback and just assume everyone has one. Folks - 1/2 the NFL is woefully inadequate at the QB position. I have no interest in re-joining those ranks.

We can win with Smith. We don't have a clear replacement for him. Go ahead and keep looking for young ones, but if you give Smith an extension that takes him through 2016/2017, you have plenty of time to find that young one without falling back into the abyss of shit we were just in.

Hella good post.

Everyones teeth gnashing is pointless anyway, Reid wants the guy and he'll get his extension... Axl will be reasonable in his demands in return for the security of knowing he's "the man" somewhere imo.

Let him walk where?

He is signed for starters pay this year and next. Sorry, but I would hate to sign him this offseason to a big contract and him to get hurt next year or in the offseason.

I say let it play out and if he is playing at a high level by mid season next year, start the talks...even if it costs us a little more that way, it would be worth it in "cover our ass" bucks.

We agree on something Alex Smith-related (Even if it is for different reasons).

With the strides Smith has made this year, it would be foolish to let him go now.

and do you think that Dorsey and Reid gave up two, 2nd round picks for 1 season? They are going to resign him. I just hope they dont break the bank for him (unless he becomes the Superbowl MVP)
