Yeah, I'd have to watch again, but I've not seen him go 3 progressions deep yet in game action.

I saw a couple of plays where he clearly hit his 2 read. Maybe times when he's gone 2 deep and then checked down; I guess that counts as a 3rd read.

But when I think of getting 3 progressions deep, I'm thinking downfield or even cycling back to a first read before a dump off. And no, I haven't seen Mahomes do that. Again, that gets to the fact that he's just not terribly comfortable in the pocket.

He DOES do well in the scramble drill when he breaks out of the pocket, keeps his eyes scanning and finds someone, but that's not a read. That's a scramble drill; pretty much the opposite of a read.

He'll get there, but he ain't there yet.

Demetrius Harris TD was his 3rd read.

Granted it was on the run, but it's still so impressive considering that he's an air raid QB from college.

Think a lot of that is due to Andy coaching him though.

So we're essentially arguing in semantics.

It looked to me like Harris had broken his route and was just trying to find a place to settle in the middle; basic scramble drill stuff. That's not a 'read' as much as it is good improv.

Two different skills. Manning/Brady probably stands in the pocket, actually finds the tiny little seam that opens for a fraction of a second and drills a ball in there before all hell breaks loose (or gives up and fires it out the back). Manziel takes the snap, rolls around a for a bit and tries to find someone in space during the maelstrom. The former made a read, the latter made a play. Both approaches have merit; a perfect approach goes from the first to the second (Rodgers, Elway, Young).

Now I suspect that Mahomes will always trend towards the latter and in busted plays that's a good thing - but I think he needs a slightly better barometer of 'busted' right now. But yeah, he's much further along than I thought he'd be.

What you make be overlooking is the fact that he may rarely get to his 3rd read because he has the ability to make any throw. He only needs a small window to DOT the receiver so he's going to be hitting that 1st/2nd read 90% of the time. His first pass of the preseason was a deep strike because thats the play that was called. We will have to rely on Reid to call those plays.

I'm not overlooking it. There are, in many cases, very good reasons he isn't going 3 deep. As you've noted, the plan isn't to get to a 3rd read and often the ball is coming out correctly to 1 or 2. Perhaps the protection isn't allowing it. All those things are true.

But to say he's going to 3+ reads is giving him credit for things he's not actually doing yet just because he hasn't demonstrated that he WON'T do it yet. That's not a great trap to fall into.

He hasn't had a lot of time in the pocket to make that many reads.
Agin I think he's been fun to watch, but he's still a ways off from being able to run the offense efficiently

He's got a long way to go for sure. I'm just surprised he's further than I thought he'd be at this point.

It's amazing isn't it. A fanbase so deprived of QB play for decades loving legit NFL talent at the QB position...

Pinch me? Are we really experiencing this? I mean we're chiefs fans, we're supposed to worship shitty game managers....

Even on his screen passes, he is leading the receiver so they are in position to face downfield immediately.

So much of what he does can't be measured.
