That would be incredibly liberating for an Afghan woman, I bet.

Good for you. I always hear uber guys complaining about how small the fees are ... etc etc. Now we know the truth. I like both lyft and uber, just figured out how to contact lyft here. Both are very good services

This drives me insane. Stupid bot bumps an old thread with a barely coherent sentence, then the next 10 people just reply on like the thread was just created.

It's not a big deal. Some of us never saw this thread the first time it was made.

I thought it was an odd bump as well but didn't really look into it yesterday. Now that I have, the guy definitely has a odd posting history, all in broken English and shows IPs from all over the world. No spamming though, but definitely not here to talk about the Chiefs. No idea wtf he's up to.

You complaining about a thread bump is like DeBerg complaining about someone starting a shitty thread.

I drove Uber for three years in Houston and quit driving in April. I live in the Houston area, and after getting in a minor accident while driving Uber, my insurance rates skyrocketed because I had to raise my liability limits and get a Rideshare endorsement (my insurance company didn't know I was driving, and it wasn't clear that I needed to tell them because Uber touts the fact that it insures you while driving). The other reason I quit is that gas/maintenance/and misc. expenses were really eating into my income from driving, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I began to look more closely at how much my passengers were paying Uber, and what my cut actually was. I had one trip where my passenger paid Uber around $75 and I got paid only $32...and there were multiple cases where Uber was taking anywhere between 25% and 50% of the fares (it was wildly inconsistent but the average was between 40% and 45%).

On the plus side, I had a few cool passengers including former Chiefs backup QB Pete Beathard, Texans OL Max Sharping, and while I can't remember his name, he'd been Neil Armstrong's commander in the Navy during the Korean War.

This is pretty much true, and accurate of my own experience driving for three years with them. Thanks to a raise at my f/t job, I was able to quit (that and I started looking closer at how much passengers were paying Uber vs. what Uber was paying me). It can be an OK side hustle, but making a "real" profit doesn't happen because of the expenses that most drivers don't take into account that eats up your earnings.

I traded in a Nissan Quest a few years before I should have had to trade it in (because I ran up the mileage driving Uber), and got almost nothing for it. I bought a brand new car and drove that for less than a year (because of Covid, and because of quitting driving) and it's value is so much less than it should be because it has more miles on it than it should for the age of the car.

The thing that stands out to me the most as something people don't consider is when he talks about how spending that much time on the road increases chances of something bad happening. Getting into an accident where you're at fault is something that can continue to haunt you even if you stopped driving for them. The icing on the cake is at the end where he explains how Uber is basically using today's drivers as a way to finance their development of autonomous vehicles. That alone should keep people from wanting to work for them.

Exactly! I drove for them out of necessity when I started doing it as a side gig, and it did help me out for the first few years (probably not as much I as I think it really did...but I'm not going to go back and do all of that math--though I did check my fares to see how much Uber was taking from time to time and a few years ago, the percentage was acceptable). It was only in the last year after I bought a brand new car and was driving that, and started hearing that Uber was taking a higher percentage of the fare than they used to, and once I verified how that had changed, and once I got a raise at my regular job...I stopped driving and won't go back. Now, if anyone asks me about it, I try to discourage them from driving if they can help it.
