When I was young and not old enough to drive I remember my brother and his friends saying things about the 'Kearney Queens'. Kearney being a street on the north side of town where kids would "cruise" looking for fun. I never really did that. Living in the burbs when I was old enough to drive I would always head out to the country away from trouble.

First GF in HS had a used chevette. Biggest POS I ever saw in a car until the next GF with a Pontiac something. Jumped that ****er many times out in the freezing cold.

Can't blame them personally, it was their father's that picked out the vehicles. But I should've took it as an omen on what them gf's were like.

I'll be damned - my grandparents lived in Kearney for about 30 years. Went up there about 2-3 times/yr and spent a whole bunch of time out at Harmon Park (their house was literally across the street.

Nice enough little town for being out in the middle of nowhere. I saw some solid hockey at that little arena they have up there. You'll occasionally see some pretty good prospects come through the USHL so those are fun games.

Kinda sad knowing that I'll almost certainly never go there again - grandparents live in Kingman, Kansas now. And lemme tell ya, Kingman is quite a downgrade on Kearney.

That's quite a haul out there and back. If your insurance would tow it for you, I'd go ahead and have that done but if I had to pay for it it's probably gonna cost a small fortune (that's, what, 8 hours from Kearney to Springfield?). And I certainly wouldn't want to make that haul there and back twice in a few days.

If the mechanic can have it fixed in a day or two, I'd just stay in town. There are worse places to be.

My circle of friends and I ran the gamut of shitty 70s cars back in high school. I drove a Vega and later a Monza. My first girlfriend had a Gremlin, my future ex-wife had a Pinto, and another friend had a Chevette. Ugh.

Between the Vega and the Monza I drove a '71 Maverick. That was probably the best of the bunch.

Had a 71' Maverick Grabber w/ 302cu. Not the best built car but it was fast as hell.

Mine (well, not mine, but my parents' replacement beater after the Vega died) was pretty bargain basement. It just had a straight 6 with a one-barrel carb.

It was certainly peppier than the Vega, though.

Yea, my friends family had the 4 door maverick 6cyl.

I swear on every damn one of those Mavericks the front sway bar bushings squeaked like hell on every little bump or turn. Drove me crazy.

I honestly don't recall having any major complaints about it, but that was 40+ years ago. Remember, the car I drove prior to it was a Vega, so basically anything would be a step up. It was faster, roomier, and didn't have a stick, so I was pretty happy with it.
