in fact i think the latest little tiff was just this last training camp when Lamar Hunt,Carl Peterson invited George W Bush to visit the chiefs.

hunt,peterson and vermeil were all Jazzed about the visit

in fact, i think Peterson wanted all the coaches to meet and greet the Prez etc .... Saunders didn't want to.

apparently the chiefs organization is a fairly open republican deal ... hunt used to be pretty active in supporting the GOP.

OFFENSIVE COACHES

Bob Bratkowski, Bengals offensive coordinator
He's done a masterful job building and tuning an offense that looks like the Indianapolis Colts unit when it was just starting to realize its potential. Bratkowski deserves a wealth of credit for the maturation of Carson Palmer, including the decision to give Palmer more freedom at the line of scrimmage when it comes to altering plays.

The Cincinnati Bengals have one of the most potent no-huddle attacks in the NFL, and the incorporation of No. 2 running back Chris Perry into the attack has also been impressive. Bratkowski has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Detroit Lions opening, but two league sources have said that report is premature.

Brad Childress, Eagles offensive coordinator
The bloom is off Childress a bit this season, as the offensive line has struggled and the Eagles failed to establish balance when the season still mattered. Last season, he seemed a lock to eventually get a job – despite many who credited Andy Reid with the unit's proficiency. Now he doesn't seem like such a shoo-in.

In a way, his plight is similar to New York Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis, whose reputation has proven mercurial in league circles over the last two seasons. But to many, the Philadelphia Eagles' internal turmoil will buy Childress a line of credit. Some still view him as a fine play-caller who can guide young quarterbacks.

Sean Payton, Cowboys assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach
He's one of the young hotshots in the league, and there were a lot of raised eyebrows when head coach Bill Parcells turned over the team's play-calling to Payton. It was the first time Parcells had done that since 1993. The Dallas Cowboys' rise among the league's offenses this year has helped his reputation.

Drew Bledsoe has been very happy with Payton's calls – including the speed of his decision making, which has allowed Bledsoe to get to the line of scrimmage with plenty of time to work. Despite denials from Oakland, one league source says Payton was indeed offered the Raiders coaching job two years ago but turned it down. His time on staffs with Parcells and Bill Belichick is very impressive, and he knows discipline. Some think he will be the league's next Jon Gruden.

Al Saunders, Chiefs offensive coordinator
Like Washington's Gregg Williams and USC's Carroll, he's been a head coach before, spending 2½ years guiding the San Diego Chargers from 1986 through 1988. He was an integral part of the St. Louis Rams' "Greatest Show On Turf" offenses, and he has been the man behind the Kansas City Chiefs' juggernaut since 2001.

Some think Saunders' age – and the offensive credit that often goes to Dick Vermeil – are two big factors why he hasn't gotten another shot at a head-coaching position. Now it's widely believed that Vermeil is setting him up to be his successor in Kansas City.

DEFENSIVE COACHES

Pete Carroll, USC head coach
First and foremost, does Carroll want back in? He recently said he won't "interview" with any teams about NFL jobs, but that could be the semantics game. Saban played that game, too, before he left Louisiana State. In truth, Carroll still feels like he can get the job done in the NFL – he told me so himself when we had a conversation after he won his first national championship at USC.

But what Carroll regretted about his last pro gig with the New England Patriots was that he never understood the pressures he would face following Bill Parcells. He also didn't like his lack of control over the roster. According to Carroll's confidants, that hasn't changed.

So he has a laundry list of "must haves" for any interested team. They are: a minimum salary of $5.5 million per year, a dedicated fan base and quality facilities, a healthy amount of existing talent on the roster, and full organizational control. Saban's setup in Miami would be a good jumping off point.

Tim Lewis, Giants defensive coordinator
He's gotten looks in the past from teams, and he might have taken over the Atlanta Falcons two years ago had he not been fired from his coordinator job with the Pittsburgh Steelers. That firing has led to some varying opinions about Lewis in NFL circles.

Some thought Lewis' relationship with players divided parts of the Steelers' locker room before he was fired. Others think he's only an above-average coordinator whose schemes can only thrive with good players. The latter might have been proved when his unit tanked last season after losing several integral players to injury.

But others think Lewis is similar to Jack Del Rio – a smart and fiery coach who connects to his units on an emotional level and displays top-notch leadership qualities. Whatever the opinion, Lewis' unit has played well this season, particularly the front seven. His defense has also dealt with in-game adversity very well, keeping the Giants afloat despite an offense that can be turnover prone.

Jim Schwartz, Titans defensive coordinator
Like Lewis, Schwartz's defenses have risen and fallen dramatically depending on health. He may still be a year or two away from head-coaching consideration, but he's widely considered one of the best young coaches in the NFL.

In a way, he's the league's answer to the "Moneyball" general managers in baseball. He's a brainiac with numbers, tendencies and analysis. He's big on discipline with the Tennessee Titans' defense, too, and he has done some impressive things with modestly paid talent this season.

Gregg Williams, Redskins defensive coordinator
Everyone will remember his 17-31 record as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, but Williams has done a fine job reviving his reputation with the Washington Redskins. While the unit has been inconsistent in the face of some injuries, Williams has, at times, had one of the league's most aggressive defenses. What's more, his demand for discipline has been unmatched, a fact that became widely publicized with the extended benching of LaVar Arrington earlier this year.

Don't be surprised if you hear Bill Belichick – another big disciplinarian who flamed out in his first coaching stint – brought up a lot when people are discussing reasons to give Williams another shot.

Wasn't Tim Lewis a coord or assistant at Pittsburgh?

He came from a 3-4 background with the Steelers, yet implemented a 4-3 with NJG. That tells me he knows how to maximize his talent and be flexible with his schemes. I like that a lot.

I think I'm ready to get my boarding pass for the Tim Lewis bandwagon.
