Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Shove your weak sauce up your ass. If I want to see random events happen in no particular order for no particular reason, I can look out the window. That's not what I go to the movies for.

I didn't the hero to win the day - but if the hero's going to get greased, perhaps we should see it.

How about remaking Casablanca, and have Rick get shot by one of Louie's cops, Victor Lazlo killed in a mugging where the assailant takes his money and throws the letters of transit into the garbage with his wallet, and Ilsa runs off with Ferrari. Boy, wouldn't that be artistic!

You simultaneously state that you 'get' the ending, then continue to argue that it's

Which resoundingly suggests you don't.

The reason is clear, it has been clearly explained herein.

The irony is, the disappointment you mistake as 'turning the movie into shit' is the disappointment that, were you sentient enough to direct it properly, the author and directors were going for.

Yes, it's unfair, it's a cop out, it leaves you disoriented and disappointed. Doesn't make it shit. It makes it a commentary on conventional expectations and how poorly they match up to real life.

A couple of weeks ago, you could have said 'yeah, let's make a movie of Michael Jackson's life, only he dies of heart failure before his comeback tour. Boy wouldn't that be artistic. "

So every movie ever made has to follow this order:

Introduction - Build Up - Climax - Outro

Also IMO, Josh Brolin's character knew that he was going to die or at least get shot at at some point, hence him being so strapped.

I think that it makes sense that it happened at a pretty random time because it can happen at any time. I don't think its necessary to see him getting killed.

Again, I know all about real life, the random things that tend to happen in real life, and the evil people who wander through it. I assume some of them even get into car wrecks after killing women, and boy, nobody saw that coming! How arty! But I don't need to see it at the movies.

And I don't need Chazz Dickensucker, super duper film critic for the Greenwich Village Enlightened Voice (or whatever rag you lifted that "commentary on conventional expectations" crap from) thinking for me, either.

I'm not one for personal insults, especially on a board we all frequent quite often......but, there's no doubt I'm integrating Chazz Dickensucker into my vocabulary at some point during the next several days.

That's sort of the way I took it. If you read McCarthy's books one of his themes is that human life is really worth nothing on the planet to other people. Sort of like, you can be here one minute and gone the next, and when it comes down to it nobody really gives a damn if you're alive or dead. To me, the way Brolin's character's death was portrayed was McCarthy's way of saying he's just another worthless crumb on the planet. And that's one of the things that gets Tommy Lee Jones's character down in the book and film- nobody cares anymore. Human life isn't worth shite to anyone and there's fewer and fewer good people.
The scene at the end when Tommy Lee Jones talks about the dream of his father is him saying guys like his dad that fought the good fight, and stood for good vs. evil are disappearing, and Lee is throwing in the towel. He says something about his dad carrying a lamp or torch. It's a symbol McCarthy uses in other books. In "The Road" the father and son say they're "carrying the fire", as in, they're representing some of the last few good people that still survive on earth.

I watched Knowing last night. While it was predictable and a bit cheesy, I enjoyed it.

Chazz Dickersuck, however, would certainly only rate it as semi-flaccid on his happy penis meter.
