NFL is Rigged: Week 18 edition

The CP consensus is that the NFL is rigged. Welp, as such, I think it’d be great to discuss this week’s script.

The NFL is rigged, so this should be easy. As easy as predicting a WWE In-Ring interview being rudely interrupted by a rival with a steel chair.

Call your shot, what kind of week 18 shenanigans is the NFL up to?

Las Vegas vs L.A: Which new stadium does the NFL prefer? TWO teams in L.A make the playoffs?

Will the NFL write in a tie game sending BOTH to the playoffs?

Will they sneak the Steelers in for one last hoorah for Ruthlessraper?

Or will they write in Lamar Jackson because he generates ratings?

Will they give the most prestigious player (Mahomes) the #1 seed, or do they want to see the Chiefs in the WC round for extra ratings?

Can we just have one thread for the "NFL is rigged" conspiracy followers?

If its all rigged and outcomes pre-determined. Why even be a fan? Or take time to post on here?

This. I don't think there is a intentional bias. One can argue that some refs are unintentionally bias to love guys like Tom Brady and the likes, but there is no conspiracy that it is rigged or that team x must win. The refereeing has been horrendous this year. The solution is in the booth. You can add 60 bodies to review video quickly every week. If there is a clear blown call it can be quickly advised to the ref crew before the ball is snapped next. It won't catch everything but it would really help the egregious calls be picked up or overturned.

The biggest problem with refs is the feel the need to make calls instantaneously instead of reflecting on what they've seen. It's human intuition to react to flailing bodies and movement regardless of causation. That is why flopping in basketball is so effective - and also when WR's have to "give up" on the play and fall down hoping for a flag.

Referees (humans) are susceptible to lobbying efforts by players and coaches, and that absolutely happens. Before, during, and after games referees are lobbied to call things a certain way, or to pay close attention to certain players. And some players/coaches are better at lobbying than others.

Tom Brady is pretty damn good at it.

Kelce, especially earlier in his career, is not.

All of this can create bias in one direction that results in poor officiating. I think an example of this is the AFC Championship game last year against the Bills. I think the Bills threw a giant fit about our DBs holding/illegal contact and the league made a point to "watch for it" in the Super Bowl. And the rest is history.

None of that is scandalous or deceptive.

The took off a potentially game ending, long pass at the end to CEH on a phantom holding...Mahomes had to make a hero play with his legs to get in position for OT...Buttker had to kick the longest FG in KC history TWICE to win it.

Do you remember who that official was? Do you remember how pissed off/curt Andy was during his Monday presser...which was bizarre after a win?

He got a "talking to"...I said it that week. They obviously cost some important people some money...
For all that shameless rigging, you'd think they could make up a defensive hold or something when the Chargers had a 1st and goal within the 5 and had to settle for a FG late in the game, or when they got the ball first in OT and promptly went 3 and out.

Or if the Chiefs knew they were supposed to lose, I assume the Chargers knew they were supposed to win... so, tell them to chuck it deep a few times and pick up a DPI.

If that was their goal, they ****ing suck at it.

Yeah. "Refs have favorites." That's why refs have earpieces in and are wired directly to the league office mastercontrol in New York...and sometimes they buzz in to change calls when they need to...and sometimes, whatever happens, happens.

If the NFL is rigged, which one of these possibilities is more likely:

1. The NFL directs the rigging and coordinates with referees to give an edge to certain teams in an effort to boost ratings, protect the brand, and generally just make more money. This benefits the league as a whole: NFL execs, coaches, players, owners - they all benefit.

2. A small group of Vegas insiders and an even a smaller group of referees occasionally coordinate to favor one team over another. They aren't able to predict scores exactly, but even just a slight edge over other bettors can result in hundreds of millions of dollars in winnings over time. This only benefits this small group of bettors and referees.

I don't know if BRC's use of "be a fan" was intentional in terms of not just saying "why watch", but I'd say there's a difference. It's one thing if you don't care how it ends, completely different if you're a fan of a team and leave the event thinking you just got shit on by the league.

I would say rigging sports would be a lot like how The Walking Dead went complete downhill or Lost back in the day.... entertaining for a while, but then completely botched by bullshit, often for the wrong reasons (such as dragging on a show far past the point when it should have ended).

If the first 55 minutes of the Bengals game was "performed", whatever, I guess.... but, then fire whoever came up with that DPI call and created such a mess at the end, as that wasn't entertaining at all.

If it is not rigged for a win, it is rigged for ratings.

How can you explain the Chiefs/Pitt game at pitt a few years ago., We are legit up 2-4 scores, then BOOM Ben gets DPI in his favor. Game is close.

Cicny/KC-we are killing them. Game gets turned to another game in many markets. Then with a few carefully make calls, Cincy makes a comeback. Makes the game more interesting so the people watching continue to watch.

What the-carefully made calls-do is puts the game in jeopardy for both teams. Changes the momentum.
